Fuel Attendants Earn ₦10,000 Monthly Amid Questions Over Union Representation
Fuel attendants in Nigeria earn as little as ₦10,000 per month, raising questions about whether the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) truly represents all oil workers.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Workers at several filling stations across the country said their salaries remain extremely low despite repeated claims that the union fights for the welfare of oil sector employees. “We work long hours every day, but our pay barely covers basic needs,” said one attendant who requested anonymity.
PENGASSAN, Nigeria’s main labor union for petroleum and gas staff, negotiates wages and benefits for senior and technical staff in the oil industry. However, fuel attendants, often considered entry-level staff, rarely see these benefits. Analysts say the union’s focus on higher-level workers leaves lower-paid employees with little support.
“The reality is that PENGASSAN primarily represents senior staff. Many junior employees, including fuel attendants, are not covered by the agreements the union signs,” said labor economist Dr. Amina Suleiman.
Nigeria’s oil sector is one of the country’s largest industries, employing thousands across upstream and downstream operations. Senior staff often receive attractive wages, health benefits, and housing allowances, while attendants struggle with basic pay.
Efforts to reach PENGASSAN for comment on the situation were unsuccessful. In past statements, the union has emphasized that it negotiates improved conditions for “all oil and gas workers,” but critics argue the benefits rarely reach entry-level staff.
The wage gap has sparked debate online, with social media users questioning whether attendants are adequately represented. Some observers jokingly compared their situation to “palm oil workers,” highlighting the stark contrast between their wages and the high earnings of senior oil staff.
Labor rights groups have called for reforms to include fuel attendants and other low-level employees in union negotiations. “No worker should earn less than what is required for a decent living,” said Chike Okafor, director of the Center for Workers’ Rights.
The low salaries have wider implications for safety and service quality at filling stations. Some attendants report taking on multiple jobs to survive, which can increase fatigue and risk of accidents.
As the oil sector continues to grow, many workers hope for a review of union representation and wage structures. Without such reforms, the gap between senior staff and entry-level workers is likely to widen further, fueling discontent among the lowest-paid employees.
