Justice Revolution: Stakeholders Unite For Tech-Driven, People-Centred Reforms
According to Nivo News, Nigeria’s justice sector may have reached a turning point as stakeholders from across the country gathered in Maiduguri, Borno State, for a retreat aimed at strengthening justice delivery through technology, innovation, and coordinated reforms.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The two-day forum, convened by the Federal Ministry of Justice under the leadership of Attorney-General Prince Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), brought together key justice institutions, policymakers, and legal experts who explored strategies to modernise the justice system.
Discussions focused on deploying digital tools to reduce case backlogs, improve transparency, and ensure access to justice for all citizens, particularly vulnerable groups. The event’s theme, “Strengthening Justice Sector Service Delivery through Technology, Innovation, and Coordinated Reform,” set the tone for wide-ranging conversations that touched on accountability, inclusivity, and innovation.
Fagbemi declared that the future of Nigeria’s justice system depends heavily on the integration of technology, stressing that digital case management, artificial intelligence in legal research, and online access to services could address long-standing problems such as delays and limited access. He, however, warned that technology alone would not suffice without coordinated reforms across institutions.
Solicitor-General Beatrice Jedy-Agba echoed the call for collaboration, describing the retreat as a platform for moving from rhetoric to practical solutions. Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum underscored the urgency of reform, linking it to peacebuilding in a region scarred by insurgency. He noted that outdated systems could no longer meet the expectations of citizens seeking faster and more accountable justice delivery.
Other notable interventions included Dr. Wahab Shittu’s call to bridge the rural-urban justice divide using mobile technology and grassroots mechanisms, and Chief Emeka Ngige’s demand for stronger funding and ICT training in legal education to prepare lawyers for the digital era. Papers also highlighted the importance of ethics and professionalism, particularly among prosecutors, as the sector embraces innovation.
Throughout the sessions, a consensus emerged: justice reform in Nigeria must be citizen-centred, technologically driven, and ethically anchored. The Maiduguri retreat, participants agreed, could mark a watershed moment if commitments are sustained — ushering in a justice system that is faster, fairer, transparent, and accessible to every Nigerian, from urban centres to remote villages.
