The 37-year-old had been unattached since leaving Al Ain in June. Ronaldo, who captained Patrício for over a decade at the international level, responded with a heartfelt message, writing: “Thank you for everything, Rui! Congratulations on your career!”

Patrício retires as Portugal’s most capped goalkeeper, having made 108 appearances for the national team since his debut in 2010. He was instrumental in some of Portugal’s greatest achievements, including the Euro 2016 title and the 2019 UEFA Nations League triumph. The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed that Patrício will be officially honoured on Friday at the City of Football in Oeiras, lauding his “unique career” and “enormous longevity.”

Patrício began his club career at Sporting CP, rising through the academy to make his senior debut in 2006 at 18. His first match was memorable, as he saved a second-half penalty to secure a 1-0 victory over Marítimo. He went on to make 467 appearances for Sporting, winning multiple domestic trophies, including two Portuguese Cups, two Super Cups, and a League Cup. He left the club in 2018 following the violent fan attack at the Alcochete training centre.

He later joined Wolverhampton Wanderers, reuniting with coach Nuno Espírito Santo, after the club paid €18 million for his transfer. Patrício made 127 appearances over three seasons at Wolves before moving to Roma, where he played 129 matches and lifted the inaugural UEFA Europa Conference League trophy under José Mourinho. Brief spells followed with Atalanta and Al Ain, where he featured in the FIFA Club World Cup, including a win over WAC Casablanca and a heavy defeat to Juventus.

On the international stage, Patrício debuted in a 4-0 victory against world champions Spain in 2010 and represented Portugal in five European Championships and three World Cups. His final national team appearance came in March 2024 in a friendly win over Sweden. Although called up for Euro 2024, he did not feature as Diogo Costa had become the first-choice goalkeeper.

President Bola Tinubu’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Olusegun Dada, made the declaration in a post on X on Sunday, expressing confidence that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) would defeat the two opposition politicians when Nigerians head to the polls in January.

Dada wrote: “We will retire Atiku and his lying brother Peter politically in January once and for all.”

The governor also endorsed the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate in Rivers State, Kingsley Chinda, declaring that the period of political hostilities in the state was over.

Fubara disclosed his position in a video shared on his X account, in which he addressed his supporters and urged them to rally behind the coalition.

The governor said peace had returned to Rivers State and called on his loyalists to support the political arrangement.

“We have made peace in the state, and I am supporting the Rainbow Coalition. President Bola Tinubu is our president and is the one that we are supporting.

“Chinda is the governorship candidate that I am supporting and everybody who believes in me will support,” he said.

Fubara also addressed supporters who might be expecting financial incentives before participating in the campaign, insisting that there was nothing to collect as he had returned to his political family.

“And for those of you who are saying Fubara, we want to collect something before we run, there is nothing to collect, I have gone back to our family, so please wherever you are give your total support to that coalition,” he stated.

The governor urged his followers to embrace the new political direction, expressing confidence that the peace agreement would usher Rivers State into a new phase of development.

“We need to move forward, the time of war is over, this is the time of peace and this peace is taking us to another level. What you miss here you gain in another place, that’s life,” he said.

Fubara further warned his supporters against invoking his name to advance any agenda that could undermine the state’s stability.

He stressed that he would not support any political activity capable of triggering fresh unrest in Rivers State.

“So please, I want this to be made clear to everybody, don’t go and say we are supporting Fubara, no. My position is this, I have said it here and clearly for everyone to hear that I’m not a party to anything that will bring instability to this state.

“I have done what I need to do, and for now we are moving forward,” he added.

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has congratulated Super Eagles midfielder Alex Iwobi after he equalled Mohamed Salah’s record for the most Premier League appearances by an African player, with both stars having featured in 328 matches.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Iwobi achieved the milestone on Saturday, October 24, when Fulham secured a 1-0 victory over Coventry City. The 30-year-old Nigerian midfielder has now drawn level with Egyptian forward Salah on the list of African players with the most appearances in the English top flight.

Iwobi is now 25 appearances away from overtaking former Ivory Coast international Kolo Touré, who made 353 Premier League appearances during his career with several English clubs.

Reacting to the achievement, the NFF’s Acting General Secretary, Dr Emmanuel Ikpeme, praised Iwobi and expressed optimism that he would soon set a new record for African players in the competition.

“The NFF celebrates Alex Iwobi for this new achievement, and we wish him even greater glory. We will be very happy to see him become the African with the most appearances in the Premier League in the near future,” Ikpeme said.

Iwobi also delivered a solid performance in Fulham’s victory over Coventry City, recording 60 touches and completing 51 passes at an accuracy rate of 86.3 per cent during his 73 minutes on the pitch.

The achievement further highlights the midfielder’s experience in football, both at club and international levels.

Iwobi reached another career milestone this summer when he earned his 100th cap for Nigeria during an international friendly against Portugal in Leiria.

The Fulham star has also helped the Super Eagles secure three medals at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), winning one silver and two bronze medals.
