Jigawa Empowers 400 Youths with Date-Palm Farming to Fight Unemployment
JIGAWA, Nigeria — The Jigawa State Government has launched a new initiative to fight youth unemployment by training and empowering 400 young people in date-palm cultivation.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The program aims to provide skills, resources, and support to young farmers, helping them build sustainable livelihoods in agriculture. Officials said the initiative will also boost local food production and create new economic opportunities in the state.
Governor Muhammad Badaru Abubakar, speaking at the launch in Dutse, said the project is part of the state’s broader efforts to reduce unemployment and support youth entrepreneurship. “We want our young people to have practical skills that can generate income and improve their communities,” he said.
The selected youths will undergo intensive training on modern date-palm farming techniques, including planting, irrigation, pest control, and harvesting. After the training, participants will receive starter kits, including seedlings, fertilizers, and access to technical support to help them establish their farms successfully.
The program was launched in partnership with agricultural experts and local farming associations. Officials believe that date-palm farming can be a profitable business for youth, given the high demand for dates in local and regional markets.
Dr. Aisha Sule, an agricultural consultant involved in the program, said, “Date-palm farming is suitable for Jigawa’s climate and can provide a stable income for young people. With proper training and support, these youths can become successful entrepreneurs in agriculture.”
The initiative also includes mentorship and business management training, helping participants learn how to market their produce and manage finances. Government officials stressed that the project is part of a long-term plan to diversify the state’s economy and reduce dependency on public employment.
One of the trainees, 25-year-old Ibrahim Musa, said the program has given him hope for the future. “Before this training, I struggled to find work. Now, I have the skills and resources to start my own farm and support my family,” he said.
Jigawa State has faced rising youth unemployment in recent years, with many young people lacking the skills or opportunities to secure stable jobs. Agricultural programs like this aim to provide practical solutions while promoting local food production.
Experts note that Nigeria has a growing demand for dates and other fruits, both domestically and for export. Developing the date-palm sector could create jobs, increase incomes, and contribute to the state’s economic growth.
The government plans to monitor the progress of the participants and provide ongoing support to ensure the success of the initiative. Officials hope the program will serve as a model for other states looking to empower youth and promote agricultural entrepreneurship.
In addition to economic benefits, the initiative is expected to improve social stability by giving young people productive alternatives to unemployment. Officials said that future plans may include expanding the program to other crops and involving more youths across the state.
As the first batch of 400 youths begins training, government officials and community leaders expressed optimism that the program will help reduce unemployment, strengthen the local economy, and create a new generation of skilled agricultural entrepreneurs.
