Abia State Government to Renovate 200 Primary Health Centres by Year-End....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Abia State Government has announced plans to renovate and retrofit 200 primary health centres across the state by the end of this year. This ambitious project is set to enhance healthcare delivery in the state and will be executed by the Ministry of Health in collaboration with the Abia State Primary Healthcare Development Agency.

During a press briefing following this week’s State Executive Council meeting, which was presided over by Governor Alex Otti, the State Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, revealed details about the initiative. He emphasized that the renovation project will commence in the first week of September 2024, with a targeted completion date by December.

“This is a bold step undertaken by the Ministry of Health. Work will commence across the state in those 200 primary health centres in the first week of September, and the delivery of those projects will be somewhere around December,” Kanu stated. He further noted that all 184 wards in the state would benefit from this project, which is expected to serve as a “Christmas gift” to the people of Abia.

Addressing Health Concerns in the State

In addition to the renovation plans, Kanu informed the public about the state’s efforts to address health concerns, including the recent suspected cases of Monkeypox in Isiala Ngwa. Out of the 13 suspected cases, nine returned negative, one was positive, and three remain unconfirmed.

Kanu also provided updates on the government’s efforts to recover public lands that had been unlawfully taken over by private individuals. He highlighted the recent actions taken by a government committee to retrieve lands belonging to Government College Umuahia, underscoring the administration’s commitment to reclaiming all illegally acquired school lands despite potential resistance.

Ongoing Reforms and Infrastructure Development

As part of ongoing reforms in the education sector, the government will soon begin verifying private schools that were previously closed down. The training of primary and secondary school teachers in the state, facilitated by Educational Consultants ERIT, is nearing completion, and all exams conducted by the Education Development Center have been successful.

On the infrastructure front, Kanu announced that a total of 108 roads have been maintained and rehabilitated across the state through direct labor. The design work for several key roads, including the Ntigha–Mbawsi–Umuala Road and the Onuinyang–Okporoenyi–Oboro–Ikwuano Road, is either ongoing or nearing completion, with strategic roads across the state also seeing significant progress.

Land Recovery Efforts and Property Management

The Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Prof. Uche Emeh Uche, addressed concerns regarding the demolition of buildings illegally constructed on Government College Umuahia’s land. He clarified that the government is not in favor of demolishing properties unless necessary. Instead, the structures already built will be repurposed for appropriate use rather than being demolished, which would be wasteful.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Health, Dr. Ngozi Azodo, assured the public that despite rumors, the state has recorded only two confirmed cases of cholera. She also mentioned that various isolation centers are being strengthened to manage any suspected outbreaks.

Furthermore, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, stated that the government has completed the identification of houses that will be demolished as part of the Umuikaa–Owerrinta road expansion project. He also noted that compensation for affected property owners will begin soon.

United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio has formally announced a significant escalation in counterterrorism cooperation between Washington and Abuja, detailing a recent high-impact joint operation that resulted in the elimination of a top global ISIS leader within Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Rubio made these statements during a hearing before the House Foreign Affairs Committee regarding the State Department’s FY27 budget request, which was held on Wednesday in Washington, DC.

The U.S. official emphasized that the United States remains deeply concerned about the rising tide of violence in Nigeria, specifically highlighting attacks against Christians. He stated that this concern has translated into a new phase of active counterterrorism partnership with Nigerian authorities.

“We are now actively in counterterrorism cooperation with the Nigerian government and Nigerian security forces, including a joint operation a couple of weeks ago that took out the number two leader of global ISIS operating from inside of the country, and that continues,” Rubio informed the committee.

The operation, which was a coordinated U.S.-Nigerian assault on May 15, targeted the compound of Abu-Bilal Al-Minuki, identified as the second-in-command of global ISIS operations. The high-value target’s stronghold was located in the volatile Lake Chad Basin region.

Adding crucial context, U.S. Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth further confirmed that Al-Minuki was the primary figure responsible for directing and executing multiple attacks on Christian communities across Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria had previously confirmed the death of Al-Minuki, noting that several of his top lieutenants were also neutralized in the precise mission. Tinubu expressed his strong desire for continued, decisive military strikes against all terrorist enclaves within the country.

Since the successful elimination of Al-Minuki, subsequent reports indicate that more joint U.S.-Nigerian operations have targeted and destroyed terrorist positions. Just days after the initial operation, Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters announced that a series of joint airstrikes in Metele, Borno State, had killed more than 20 ISIS/ISWAP fighters. Furthermore, on June 1, a separate airstrike in Arege, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State, conducted by the Nigerian military in collaboration with the United States Africa Command, resulted in the death of an additional 21 ISWAP insurgents.
