Federal Government Powers Edo Communities with Hybrid Mini-Grids After Decades of Darkness

The Federal Government has successfully commissioned two hybrid mini-grids with a total capacity of 200kW for the Oloyan and Sule camp communities in Ovia South and Ovia North East Local Government Areas of Edo State. This project, spearheaded by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), aims to bridge the energy gap in rural Nigeria. The Oloyan community now benefits from a 100kW power supply, while the Sule camp community enjoys a similar 100kW provision, effectively transforming the energy landscape for these long-neglected areas.

Speaking at the commissioning, REA Managing Director Abba Abubakar Aliyu highlighted the significance of the project as part of the Federal Government’s broader initiative under the Rural Electrification Fund. He emphasized that the fund is a crucial tool for enabling sustainable development in rural areas through reliable energy access.

Aliyu, represented by the agency’s Executive Director, Doris Uboh, pointed out that energy poverty has been a significant barrier to progress in rural communities across the nation. He stressed the importance of such projects in providing these communities with a new lease on life.

“In selecting the sites for these mini off-grids, REA considered the economic potential of the communities, particularly their critical agricultural activities,” Aliyu said. “Our interventions in unserved and underserved communities are proving to be catalysts for sustainable development, aligning with the Federal Government’s objectives. The off-grid, renewable energy ecosystem in Nigeria continues to drive the economy forward.”

This recent commissioning brings the total number of mini-grids in Edo State to three, with the first one launched in Adebayo community two years ago. To ensure the project’s sustainability, a committee comprising community members has been established to oversee and secure the infrastructure.

Highlighting the importance of focusing on rural development, Aliyu noted, “Urban areas have long received attention, while rural communities have been neglected. This project is a key part of President Bola Tinubu’s renewed hope agenda, aimed at bringing development to areas that have been overlooked for far too long.”

Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, also praised the agency’s dedication to delivering sustainable energy solutions to communities in the state, recognizing the positive impact this initiative will have on the local population.
