Electoral Bill: Senate Spokesman Vows, ‘We Will Approve Votes And Proceedings’.
Amid rising nationwide protests over the removal of the phrase “real-time” from the amended Electoral Act, the Senate has assured Nigerians that the matter will be revisited at an emergency plenary session scheduled for today (Tuesday).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The assurance came from Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Public Affairs, following public backlash over the Senate’s decision to make the electronic transmission of election results discretionary rather than mandatory.
On Monday, hundreds of pro-democracy protesters gathered at the National Assembly complex in Abuja, demanding the inclusion of “real-time electronic transmission” in the final version of the Electoral Act Amendment Bill. Carrying placards and banners, the demonstrators stressed that a clear and unambiguous provision was necessary to ensure electoral transparency and public trust in future elections.
In response, Adaramodu affirmed that the National Assembly respects citizens’ right to protest, describing peaceful demonstrations as an essential feature of democratic governance.
“The Senate is not averse to Nigerians showing their feelings. We are in a democracy, and people have the right to express themselves peacefully,” he told Vanguard.
He added that the Senate would reconvene today in an emergency sitting to approve the votes and proceedings from last Wednesday’s plenary, during which the controversial clause was passed.
Adaramodu reassured the public that lawmakers remain committed to their constitutional responsibilities and will consider the concerns raised by Nigerians.
“Tomorrow (today), we will have an emergency sitting to approve the votes and proceedings of our last session. As a Senate, we welcome Nigerians expressing their views peacefully. We are in a democracy, and we will continue to act in the interest of the people of Nigeria,” he said.
