El-Rufai Explains Why He Skipped Peter Obi’s Protest On Electronic Transmission Of Results.
Former Kaduna State Governor Nasir El-Rufai has said he would have joined former presidential candidate Peter Obi and others in protesting for the restoration of electronic transmission of election results, but he is currently abroad.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking in an interview on Trust TV, El-Rufai described the Senate’s recent action as opening the door for post-election manipulation.
“I would have joined Mr. Peter Obi and other party leaders in protesting at the National Assembly to restore real-time, mandatory transmission of results from polling units,” he said, expressing regret at being unable to return to Nigeria for the demonstration.
El-Rufai stressed that electronic transmission of results is the most effective way to prevent electoral manipulation, noting that rigging typically occurs during the collation process rather than at the polling units.
“It is the only way to stop the manipulation that takes place at collation centers. Rigging doesn’t happen at the polling unit; it happens during collation,” he explained.
He further lamented that, while the House of Representatives passed the provision for mandatory electronic transmission, the Senate appears to be obstructing it.
“This provision would have improved the quality of our elections. But we all know why the ruling party and the sitting government resist it—they know they cannot win fairly,” he alleged.
El-Rufai added that post-voting manipulation is the ruling party’s primary advantage. “The only way they have a fighting chance is to manipulate the results after people have voted,” he said.
