Bitter Power Struggle Divides Lagos Federal Housing Estate Residents
LAGOS — A serious dispute over electricity control has broken out at the Lagos Federal Housing Estate, leaving residents divided and struggling with unstable power supply.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The fight, which has been growing for months, is between community leaders, estate associations, and electricity contractors. Each group claims the right to manage the estate’s power distribution. As a result, families in the estate are caught in the middle, facing blackouts, rising bills, and frequent clashes among residents.
Dispute Over Control
At the center of the problem is who should take responsibility for electricity management. Some residents support the estate’s original association, which says it has legal rights to run power distribution. Others back a new committee that argues the old group has failed to deliver steady electricity and fair billing.
Both sides accuse each other of corruption, mismanagement, and exploitation. Angry words have now turned into protests, meetings that end in shouting matches, and in some cases, physical confrontations.
Families Left in Darkness
Ordinary residents say they are the ones suffering the most. Many report being forced to pay extra charges for electricity, while others are left without power for days. Businesses inside the estate, including shops and small factories, also complain of heavy losses due to irregular supply.
“We are tired of fighting. We just want light,” said one frustrated resident, a mother of three who runs a small cold-room business. “Our food gets spoiled because there is no power. Every day we hear new rules from different groups asking for money.”
Government Intervention Demanded
Community elders and youth groups are now calling on the Lagos State Government and the Federal Ministry of Housing to step in. They want an independent audit of the estate’s electricity system and a clear authority appointed to manage supply.
Some residents argue that the only solution is for the government to hand full control of electricity in the estate to the official power distribution company. Others believe the estate should remain in charge, but under new, transparent leadership.
“The government cannot keep quiet while we fight ourselves,” said another resident during a recent protest. “If they don’t act, this crisis will get worse.”
Security Concerns Rising
The tension has also raised fears of insecurity. Reports show that estate security officers have clashed with angry youth who accuse them of siding with one faction. Some residents now worry that the conflict could lead to violence if no urgent solution is found.
Local police confirmed they are monitoring the situation. A senior officer, who asked not to be named, said the estate dispute is being watched closely. “We are aware of the tensions and are working with community leaders to prevent breakdown of law and order,” he said.
The Bigger Picture
The power crisis at Lagos Federal Housing Estate reflects a wider problem across Nigeria. Many communities face irregular electricity, high bills, and disputes between local managers and distribution companies. Experts say until Nigeria reforms its power sector and ensures transparency, similar battles will continue to erupt.
For now, residents of the estate remain trapped between rival groups, powerless in more ways than one.
“We don’t know who to follow anymore,” said a retired civil servant who has lived in the estate for 25 years. “But we know one thing — without power, life here will keep getting harder.”
