Somto, a young journalist known for his passion and dedication, died earlier this week under circumstances that shocked colleagues, friends, and family. His passing has created an outpouring of grief across Nigeria’s media community and beyond.
In an emotional message, his father said the loss is a tragedy no parent should ever face. “Somto’s death pierced my heart like an arrow,” he said. “He was not only my son, he was my pride, my hope, and my joy. I cannot explain the pain I feel.”
A rising voice in journalism
Somto worked with Arise TV, one of Nigeria’s leading television stations, where he quickly gained respect for his professionalism. He reported on major national issues, from politics to social events, and was praised for his calm presence and clear voice on air.
Colleagues described him as hardworking, humble, and full of life. “Somto was always ready to take assignments no matter how difficult,” one colleague said. “He had a bright future in journalism, but sadly, it has been cut short.”
Shockwaves in the media industry
The news of Somto’s death spread fast on social media, with tributes pouring in from journalists, politicians, and viewers who followed his work.
Several journalists’ associations released statements mourning his death and calling him a promising voice silenced too soon. “We have lost a brave reporter who stood for truth,” one statement read.
Arise TV also expressed sadness, saying the entire newsroom is still in shock. “Somto was a valued member of our team. His commitment to good journalism will always be remembered,” the management said.
A family in deep mourning
For Somto’s family, the pain is personal and heavy. His father said the loss is beyond words. “Every parent prays to see their children grow, succeed, and bury them when the time comes naturally. But in this case, I am the one burying my child. It is a wound that will never heal,” he said.
Relatives described Somto as a gentle and respectful young man who carried the family’s dreams with him. His mother, too heartbroken to speak publicly, was seen weeping as friends and neighbors gathered to console the family.
Questions about his passing
Details about the cause of Somto’s death remain unclear, and many have called for a full explanation. Some close to him said he appeared healthy days before his death, making the news even harder to accept.
Health experts remind the public that young people can also face sudden medical conditions, stressing the importance of regular check-ups and medical attention.
A life cut short but remembered
Though Somto’s life ended too soon, his impact is being remembered. His reports, interviews, and television appearances remain as a record of his passion for journalism.
Tributes continue to flood social media, with many using the hashtag #RIPSomto to honor him. Viewers recall how his reports often gave them clear information about the country’s biggest issues.
Final farewell
Funeral arrangements are being discussed by the family, who have asked for privacy as they grieve. Many expect the burial to draw a large crowd of journalists, public figures, and supporters who admired his work.
As the father struggles with the reality of his son’s passing, his words echo the deep pain of parents everywhere who have lost a child. “Somto was more than a son,” he said softly. “He was my heart. And now my heart has been broken.”
Somto’s story is a reminder of the fragility of life, the importance of supporting young talents, and the lasting mark a person can leave in just a short time.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the FCT University of Science and Technology in Abaji will begin operations during President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Wike made the revelation on Tuesday while on a thank-you tour of Abaji Area Council, appreciating residents for supporting Tinubu’s candidates in the February 21 FCT area council elections.
He noted that the FCT Administration is already putting in place the necessary infrastructure and essential facilities to ensure the university’s successful launch.
Wike urged the community to remain patient, assuring that the university would become a reality within Tinubu’s tenure.
“From our discussions, it is clear how significant this university is, not only for the people of Abaji but for all FCT residents. It will create jobs and drive development in the community. I would be honored to officially open the university for operations,” he said.
The minister emphasized that his visit was to thank residents for keeping their promise to support the President, highlighting the importance of acknowledging positive deeds.
Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:
“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.
Wike also praised the outgoing Abaji Area Council Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as a humble and dedicated leader.
