Mediation Training Institute Raises Alarm Over Fake ADR Schools
The Mediation Training Institute (MTI) has issued a strong warning to the public and professionals about the rise of unaccredited Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) institutions in the country.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to MTI, several groups are presenting themselves as professional ADR training centers without proper approval or recognition. The Institute said such organizations are misleading people, selling fake certificates, and putting the future of conflict resolution practice at risk.
Warning to Professionals and the Public
In a recent statement, MTI explained that ADR is a sensitive profession that requires high standards and credibility. ADR involves resolving disputes outside of court, through mediation, negotiation, and arbitration. MTI stressed that only accredited and licensed institutions are allowed to train and certify mediators.
The Institute warned lawyers, business leaders, community leaders, and the general public to be careful before registering with any ADR training school. MTI emphasized that attending unapproved training not only wastes money but also denies graduates the legal recognition they need to practice.
“Many of these so-called institutions are neither accredited by relevant government agencies nor recognized by international ADR bodies,” MTI said. “People must verify before enrolling in any program.”
Growing Concern Over Fake Certificates
The Institute noted that the growing number of fake ADR institutions is causing confusion in the legal and business communities. Companies and organizations looking for certified mediators have complained about job applicants presenting certificates from unknown schools.
MTI explained that this trend can damage trust in mediation and arbitration, which are important tools for reducing pressure on courts. The use of fake certificates may also affect the quality of dispute resolution, leaving parties unsatisfied and possibly leading back to costly legal battles.
Call for Stronger Regulation
MTI urged the government, especially education and justice regulators, to take strong action against unaccredited ADR institutions. The Institute suggested that monitoring and enforcement are urgently needed to protect the profession.
“We must not allow people to play with something as serious as mediation,” the Institute said. “ADR is about peace, fairness, and justice. If fake schools are allowed to continue, the whole system will collapse.”
The Institute also encouraged professional bodies, such as bar associations and chambers of commerce, to support awareness campaigns and help identify fake institutions.
Advice to Students and Practitioners
For those interested in pursuing a career in ADR, MTI advised that they should:
- Check if the institution is accredited by recognized government bodies.
- Confirm the school’s membership in respected international ADR organizations.
- Ask for references and verify the authenticity of past graduates.
- Avoid short-cut programs that promise quick certificates without proper training.
MTI added that legitimate training usually involves practical sessions, supervised mediation, and strict evaluation, not just classroom lectures.
Protecting the Future of Mediation
The Institute said it remains committed to protecting the future of mediation and ensuring that Nigeria and other countries build strong systems for peaceful dispute resolution.
“Mediation and arbitration are vital for business, governance, and community peace,” MTI said. “We must ensure only qualified and trained professionals are allowed to practice.”
MTI’s warning comes at a time when ADR is gaining wider acceptance as an alternative to the slow and expensive court system. With more businesses, families, and communities turning to mediation, the Institute said there is no room for fake schools and unqualified mediators.
By urging vigilance and stronger regulation, MTI believes the ADR profession can maintain its credibility and continue to provide fair and effective solutions to conflicts.
