Jackpot in Morocco! Super Falcons Rewarded with $200K for WAFCON Progress
Nigeria’s Super Falcons have clinched a guaranteed $200,000 prize following their 1-0 victory over Botswana in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Thursday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The hard-fought win in Casablanca marked Nigeria’s second consecutive triumph at the tournament, cementing their place as the first team to qualify for the quarter-finals with a game still to play. It also preserved their flawless run in the competition so far.
The $200,000 reward—equivalent to roughly ₦305 million—represents a significant financial boost for the reigning African champions.
In a tense Group B encounter, the Falcons left it late to break the deadlock, but the result reaffirmed their dominance. With top spot already secured, Nigeria now turns its attention to their final group match against Algeria on Sunday.
This edition of WAFCON features a revamped prize structure introduced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to elevate the status and competitiveness of women’s football across the continent. Under the new model, every team that reaches the quarter-finals is assured of at least $200,000—more than in any previous tournament.
Teams advancing to the semi-finals will earn $350,000, while the runner-up is guaranteed $500,000. The ultimate prize for the champions stands at a historic $1 million—the largest payout ever in the tournament’s history.
CAF also announced compensation for all participating nations: third-placed teams in each group will receive $150,000, while teams finishing bottom will earn $125,000. The revised financial package signals a strong commitment to closing the gap between men’s and women’s football in Africa.
