Polling Paralysis: Lagos LG Election Sees Delays, First Vote Finally Cast in Ikosi-Isheri
Banjoko Ibidunni cast the first vote at Ward D, Orile, within the Ikosi-Isheri Local Council Development Area of Kosofe LGA, Lagos State, at exactly 10:28 a.m. on Saturday—over two hours behind schedule.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In an interview with Punch Online, Ibidunni urged fellow citizens, particularly the youth, to take civic responsibility seriously.
“I call on all youths to come out. We cannot sit back at home and complain. Let’s exercise our civic rights,” she said.
Our correspondent observed that many voters only began arriving at the polling unit around 9:00 a.m., after struggling to find the location due to a lack of signage and on-ground guidance.
“I had to call the councillor before we could even find the polling unit,” one resident said.
Despite the delay, Ibidunni—who had waited patiently for hours—was able to vote without incident. The late arrival of electoral officers was cited as a key factor behind the delayed start.
An electoral officer at the scene told The PUNCH that 77 voters were registered at the unit, but as of 10:35 a.m., only four had turned up. At that time, there was no queue at the polling station.
This delay contradicted earlier assurances by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC), which had promised a prompt start to voting across all 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas.
The local government elections are meant to elect new chairpersons and councillors tasked with overseeing grassroots governance. However, widespread reports of logistical lapses, voter apathy, and low turnout have continued to plague the process.
As of the time of filing this report, voting was still underway at Ward D.
