“We Cannot Sacrifice Our Children On The Altar Of Trade” – NAFDAC Defends Ban On Sachet Alcohol.
The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has defended its enforcement of the ban on sachet alcohol, emphasizing that the health and safety of children take priority over commercial interests.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Speaking on Friday on Arise News, NAFDAC Director-General Professor Mojisola Adeyeye said the move aims to prevent future alcohol addiction among youths and protect public health.
“So, while some focus solely on profit, we are focused on health. We cannot sacrifice our children on the altar of trade,” she said.
Adeyeye clarified that the ban targets only small packaged sachet alcohol, not alcohol as a whole. “We approve alcohol in other packaging; it’s only the tiny sachets that are prohibited.”
She also dismissed claims that a court order had halted the ban, saying NAFDAC has received no such order and is acting on legislative backing from the Senate.
Tracing the policy’s history to 2018, Adeyeye noted that sachet alcohol with 43–45% concentration was initially given a five-year period to reorganize under Federal Ministry of Health supervision. An additional one-year extension, granted by the Minister, expired in December 2025. Enforcement has now resumed despite opposition from manufacturers.
Addressing suggestions that warning labels could curb underage drinking, she stressed that accessibility and concealment of sachets make them particularly harmful. “Schoolchildren are already getting addicted; some say they cannot study for exams without a sachet. We are creating addicts,” she warned.
Adeyeye also highlighted Nigeria’s international obligations under a 2010 World Health Assembly agreement, which commits the country to prevent alcohol from being easily accessible to vulnerable populations.
NAFDAC is shutting down production lines for sachets, not entire companies, and has been engaging manufacturers throughout the process, including through regular meetings with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN).
