Narrowly Averted Tragedy: Security Guard Accidentally Shoots Himself at Enugu State Broadcasting Service....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

A potential disaster was narrowly avoided on Wednesday at the Enugu State Broadcasting Service (ESBS) newsroom when a private security guard accidentally shot himself in the foot. The incident occurred during peak news production hours, creating a tense situation for staff and guests present.

The security guard, assigned to Managing Director Ladi Akeredolu-Ali, was reportedly holding a baby belonging to a staff member when the incident unfolded. His gun fell to the ground, accidentally discharging. In a hurried attempt to recover the weapon, the guard accidentally pulled the trigger, causing the gun to fire and strike his foot.

The incident took place while the Managing Director was on a routine visit to supervise the production of the station’s 4 p.m. news bulletin. The newsroom was busy, with three editors and other staff members present. Fortunately, no one else, including the baby, was harmed during the incident.

Sources within ESBS emphasized the serious risk posed to the newsroom’s personnel. One individual familiar with the situation commented on the guard’s role, stating, “The armed security personnel are part of a group of over 10 hunters hired by the Managing Director. They are often used to intimidate staff, station guests, and visitors.”

Recounting the incident, another source shared, “It happened around 3:20 p.m. The Managing Director entered the newsroom to supervise the production when the guard dropped his gun. Thankfully, someone took the baby from him before the gun discharged. But the shot shattered the guard’s foot.”

The source continued, “ESBS has become militarized since the Managing Director’s appointment. He brought in hunters with advanced weapons for security purposes and began removing trees from the premises, claiming it was necessary for safety.”

The Managing Director’s approach to security has raised concerns among staff members, who report being harassed by the armed personnel on a daily basis. Some employees have even resigned due to the overwhelming presence of security guards and their treatment of visitors and guests during live programs. “If you complained, the Managing Director would often dismiss your concerns, saying you were lucky not to have been shot,” a source stated.

In a separate matter, three internal security guards were reportedly placed on indefinite suspension after being accused of theft. However, according to sources, this has not resolved the issue of equipment theft, which continues to be a problem at the station.

When equipment was moved from the ESBS Okpatu site, an important piece of broadcasting gear went missing. Internal security personnel were blamed and arrested, but the thefts have persisted even with private security guards now in place.

Efforts to reach Managing Director Akeredolu-Ali for comments have been unsuccessful, as he has not responded to calls or text messages at the time of this report.

Human rights lawyer Frank Tietie has criticized the nomination and subsequent confirmation of Professor Abayomi Fasina, the former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti, as a non-career ambassador designate.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

  • Prior to his confirmation, a coalition of civil society organizations protested at the National Assembly on July 7, 2026, opposing Fasina’s nomination due to pending court cases involving allegations of sexual harassment, human rights violations, and victimization.

  • Despite these protests, the Nigerian Senate officially confirmed Fasina’s appointment as a non-career ambassador on Thursday.

Frank Tietie’s Position

  • During an interview on ARISE Television, Tietie argued that nominating an individual with such “baggage” was a mistake, emphasizing that ambassadors represent Nigeria in the same capacity as the President.

  • Tietie stated that the government should have sent the “right signals” by avoiding such controversial appointments, especially given the current state of governance.

  • He argued that even in the absence of a final court judgment, the allegations themselves have “tainted” Fasina’s reputation, and the Senate should have delayed the confirmation until the legal matters were resolved.

  • Tietie also suggested that the National Assembly’s decision overlooks significant social changes regarding how such allegations are now viewed by society.
