Enugu State Government Demolishes Artisan Market Amid Controversy Over Criminal Activity Claims

Governor Peter Mbah’s administration in Enugu State has begun the demolition of the Artisan Market, commonly known as the goat market, which has been primarily operated by northern traders. This action has raised significant concerns as no alternative arrangements have been provided for those affected.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) has defended the demolition, labeling the market as a criminal hideout. According to ECTDA Chairman Uche Anya, various criminal activities, including armed robbery and drug trafficking, have been reported in the area. Anya stated that “this is no ordinary market,” highlighting the serious security issues associated with it.

However, the demolition has resulted in the destruction of hundreds of businesses, leaving many traders devastated. Affected individuals have voiced their outrage, claiming that the government has shown a blatant disregard for their livelihoods. Oke Eze, a tricycle parts dealer, expressed his frustration, stating that this marks the second demolition under different administrations. He recounted how former Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi had previously demolished the market to seize land for an estate, resulting in significant losses for traders like himself.

“I lost over N15 million in damages during the first demolition,” Eze lamented. “Now I have built another shop, and Peter Mbah has come again and demolished it. His claim that criminals are hiding inside the market is merely an excuse to destroy hundreds of businesses and push people back to the villages. What are security agencies for if not to investigate and apprehend criminals?”

Traders are not only mourning their financial losses but also expressing concerns about the broader implications for the local economy. “How many markets have they demolished in a space of one year without providing alternatives?” Eze questioned. “Many people have died from heartbreak. We are already facing a bad economy, and now our businesses are being destroyed.”

In response to the outcry, Anya stated that while the government acknowledges the presence of legitimate traders, the environment had become a hotbed for illicit activities, including brothels and kidnappers’ dens. “No serious government can condone what has transpired at New Artisan Market,” he asserted, adding that plans are in place to relocate the legitimate cow and goat traders to a more suitable environment.

Makinde made the declaration on Thursday during the APM South-West town hall meeting in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

He expressed confidence that the party would secure a sweeping victory in the 2027 polls, describing its agenda as a plan to reset the country.

Makinde made the prediction after Mohammed was introduced at the gathering and described as an incoming senator.

Speaking at the event, the APM presidential candidate said, “Well, APM is going to win this election overwhelmingly because this is the reset agenda being put before Nigerians, so I dare to say that my national leader is the incoming Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He urged Nigerians to listen to the party’s message and support its proposed agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.

Makinde also discussed the qualities he believes Nigerians should consider when choosing their next president, arguing that physical energy and the ability to tackle national challenges should take precedence over age.

According to him, the next president must possess the stamina to work long hours and respond effectively to the country’s pressing problems.

He stated, “While I will not make age an issue in this campaign, I will make energy, having energy, being able to stay up late to deal with the challenges we face as a country.”

Makinde further challenged presidential candidates to demonstrate their physical fitness, urging voters to consider their capacity to handle the demands of the presidency.

“So please, when they bring their presidential candidates, let the candidates be able to jump, and if they can do that, vote for them,” he added.
