Traditional Ruler Criticizes League of Northern Democrats as Distraction from National Unity

An economist and traditional ruler, Da Jonathan Sunday Akuns, of Daffo in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, has expressed strong disapproval of the newly promoted League of Northern Democrats (LND), describing it as a distraction from the pressing need for national unity and a truly people-centered constitution in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

This criticism comes on the heels of a summit held in Abuja by notable northern leaders, including former governors, senators, and other prominent figures, who gathered to strategize on revitalizing the region’s political and economic influence ahead of the 2027 elections.

Akuns, speaking to journalists on Wednesday, argued that the emphasis on regional identity, particularly the use of terms like “North,” “Northern Elders Forum,” and “Arewa Republic,” is outdated and divisive. He emphasized that these labels are merely geographic descriptions that have lost relevance in modern Nigeria, a nation formed by the unification of diverse ethnic groups through colonial conquest.

“The idea behind the LND is weather-beaten and a source of great distraction,” Akuns stated. He contended that the focus should instead be on establishing a constitution that genuinely represents the interests of all Nigerians, rather than on resurrecting defunct regional identities that could further fragment the country.

Akuns, a vocal advocate for the reinvention of the 1963 republican constitution, which he believes holds the key to preserving Nigeria’s stability, dismissed the concept of a monolithic North as “grotesque” and “devoid of nativity.” He argued that the country’s survival depends on recognizing its pluralistic nature and creating federating units that truly reflect the diversity of its ethnic groups.

The traditional ruler urged the LND promoters to shift their focus towards supporting national cohesion and assisting President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in addressing critical issues facing the country. He reiterated that reviving the 1963 Constitution would align with Nigeria’s democratic values and ensure that governance is truly “of the people” rather than imposed upon them.

He expressed confidence that the party would secure a sweeping victory in the 2027 polls, describing its agenda as a plan to reset the country.

Makinde made the prediction after Mohammed was introduced at the gathering and described as an incoming senator.

Speaking at the event, the APM presidential candidate said, “Well, APM is going to win this election overwhelmingly because this is the reset agenda being put before Nigerians, so I dare to say that my national leader is the incoming Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.”

He urged Nigerians to listen to the party’s message and support its proposed agenda ahead of the 2027 elections.

Makinde also discussed the qualities he believes Nigerians should consider when choosing their next president, arguing that physical energy and the ability to tackle national challenges should take precedence over age.

According to him, the next president must possess the stamina to work long hours and respond effectively to the country’s pressing problems.

He stated, “While I will not make age an issue in this campaign, I will make energy, having energy, being able to stay up late to deal with the challenges we face as a country.”

Makinde further challenged presidential candidates to demonstrate their physical fitness, urging voters to consider their capacity to handle the demands of the presidency.

“So please, when they bring their presidential candidates, let the candidates be able to jump, and if they can do that, vote for them,” he added.
