A 30-year-old man has been detained by the police in Enugu State for the alleged murder of his neighbor’s four-year-old daughter while she was asleep. The tragic incident occurred in Nsukka Local Government Area on August 18.
The Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, released a statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the arrest. According to the statement, officers from the Anti-Cultism Tactical Squad swiftly responded to a distress call reporting the murder of the young girl in a compound on Orba Road.
“The lifeless body of the child was immediately taken to the hospital, where a doctor sadly confirmed her death. Her remains have since been deposited in the mortuary,” Ndukwe reported.
During the suspect’s arrest, police recovered the knife allegedly used to commit the crime, along with quantities of what is suspected to be hemp and an object believed to be a charm. The suspect, identified as a resident of the compound where the child lived, originally hails from Umuagu-Ozalla in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State.
Preliminary investigations revealed that before targeting the innocent child, the suspect attempted to attack other neighbors. He then entered the victim’s apartment, where he found her sleeping helplessly. In a horrifying act, he used a knife to slit her throat. The child’s mother had initially fled to protect her other children, only to return and find her daughter fatally wounded.
The suspect confessed to the crime, claiming he acted under the influence of drugs, including hemp, methamphetamine (commonly known as “Mkpuru-mmiri”), and an alcoholic drink known as Action Bitters. Additionally, the suspect admitted to being a member of the Vikings Confraternity and revealed that he had previously killed a rival cult member during a clash in Jos, Plateau, in 2022.
Enugu State’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, condemned the act as barbaric and unimaginable. He expressed his deepest condolences to the victim’s family and assured the public that the police would do everything possible to ensure justice is served swiftly.
“The Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department has been instructed to expedite the investigation and ensure the case is prosecuted within record time,” Uzuegbu stated.
The Commissioner also urged citizens to be vigilant and aware of the behavioral patterns of their neighbors to prevent such senseless tragedies in the future.
An Ogun State Magistrate Court presided over by Magistrate O.L. Oke has sentenced two men, Moruf Okusanya (40) and Babatunde Gafar (33), to seven years in prison each without an option of a fine, following their conviction on a four-count charge.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Case Background and Prosecution
The convicts were apprehended following a violent cult clash at the Ikenne Town Hall on October 23, 2023, which severely disrupted public peace and local activities.
Prosecuting officer ASP Olaide Rawlings established during the trial that Okusanya belonged to the Eiye Confraternity, while Gafar was affiliated with the Alora Confraternity, alongside other accomplices currently at large. Their actions violated several provisions of the Prohibition of Forcible Entry and Occupation of Landed Properties, Armed Robbery, Cultism, Kidnapping and Other Anti-Violent and Related Offences Law of Ogun State, 2016.
Finding the prosecution’s evidence credible and compelling beyond a reasonable doubt, Magistrate Oke delivered the sentence to serve as a strict deterrent against unlawful secret societies and violent disturbances in the state.
The Nigeria Police Force, operating via the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB) in Abuja, successfully apprehended and repatriated Mahadijiria Abdoulaye, a Chadian national wanted by authorities in N’Djamena over the May 3, 2026, murder and torture of Nazik Mahamat Saleh . Following an international arrest warrant issued on June 22, 2026, by the Court of Appeal in N’Djamena for Abdoulaye and her accomplice Fatime Senoussi Mouktar—alongside links to narcotics trafficking—the suspect fled to Nigeria. Intelligence-led operations tracked her down to Railway Quarters in Nasarawa Local Government Area, Kano State, where she was arrested on August 5, 2026. Under established bilateral frameworks and in collaboration with INTERPOL NCB N’Djamena, she was repatriated back to Chad via Lomé, Togo, on August 14, 2026, to face trial. Following their guilty pleas, each received a 12-month prison sentence with an option of a ₦100,000 fine.
