Enugu State Shifts Local Government Elections to September 21, 2024
The Enugu State Independent Electoral Commission (ENSIEC) has officially changed the date for the upcoming local government and councillorship elections, moving them from the previously scheduled date of October 5 to September 21, 2024. The decision to reschedule the elections comes in compliance with a court ruling related to suit No. E/608m/2024 Aninri LG & 16 Ors v. ENSIEC, issued on August 27, 2024. Ngwu explained that the commission is amending its activities and timetable to align with the court’s directive.
In the newly released timetable titled “Public Notice announcing the Chairmanship and Councillorship Elections in all the Local Government Councils in Enugu State,” several key dates were outlined:
- June 3-14, 2024: Political parties are to submit information regarding the conduct of party primaries, specifying the time, venue, and details of these primaries.
- August 1-19, 2024: This period will be designated for conducting party primaries, including the resolution of any disputes that arise.
- August 23-27, 2024: Political parties will be required to obtain nomination forms for the elections.
- August 28-30, 2024: Political parties must submit their list of nominated candidates to ENSIEC’s headquarters.
- August 31-September 6, 2024: The credentials of candidates will be checked. Councillorship candidates will have their credentials verified at their respective Local Government Headquarters, while chairmanship candidates will undergo checks at ENSIEC’s headquarters.
- September 9-10, 2024: Political parties will receive feedback regarding qualified and unqualified candidates.
- September 11-12, 2024: Political parties will replace any unqualified candidates, and they must submit the names and photographs of two party agents for each polling unit.
- September 7-20, 2024: Campaigns will commence, allowing candidates and their parties to promote their agendas until September 19, when campaigning ends at 6 PM.
- September 21, 2024: Voters’ accreditation and voting will take place from 8 AM to 3 PM using the Open Secret Ballot System.
- September 28, 2024: A run-off election for chairmanship and/or councillorship positions will be held if necessary.
