Global Crackdown: 55 Governments Using Travel Restrictions to Silence Political Opponents
At least 55 governments worldwide are employing travel restrictions as a tool to suppress perceived political opponents, according to a recent report by Freedom House. The report, released on Thursday, highlights the alarming trend of authoritarian regimes using measures such as revoking citizenship, imposing travel bans, confiscating passports, and denying consular services to curb the freedom of movement of those deemed a threat.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Freedom House, a U.S.-based nonprofit dedicated to promoting democracy, compiled this report through interviews with 31 individuals from Belarus, India, Nicaragua, Rwanda, and Saudi Arabia. These individuals have experienced these restrictive tactics firsthand, providing crucial insights into how such measures are being used to stifle dissent and political activism.
Tactics of Repression
The governments named in the report utilize at least one of these repressive methods as retaliation against political activism or dissent. According to Nicole Bibbins Sedaca, interim president of Freedom House, authoritarian regimes are increasingly looking for ways to silence opponents. “Without more awareness and concerted efforts by the international community to address movement restrictions, political imprisonment, and transnational repression, the use of these tactics to muzzle dissent and violate fundamental rights will only grow,” Sedaca warned.
One of the most infamous examples highlighted in the report is the assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi in October 2018. Khashoggi was murdered at the Saudi consulate in Istanbul while attempting to obtain documents necessary for his marriage to his Turkish fiancée.
The report also draws attention to Nicaragua’s deportation of 222 political prisoners to the United States in 2023, after which their citizenship was revoked. Carlos Fernando Chamorro, founder of the news website Confidencial in Nicaragua, expressed the profound personal impact of these actions, stating, “I do not have a valid identity in Nicaragua and my children do not have a father or mother because their father and mother do not exist. We have had all of our property confiscated, our house, all of our assets, our retirement pensions.”
Regional and Global Impact
The Middle East stands out as the region where revoking citizenship is most commonly employed as a repressive tactic. Over the last decade, authorities in Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, and the United Arab Emirates have stripped hundreds of political dissidents, human rights activists, and journalists of their nationality.
The report reveals that about 40 governments impose restrictions on movement within or outside their borders. In countries like India and Saudi Arabia, there is often no official list of those targeted—victims frequently discover their status only upon arrival at an airport or through hearsay.
Additionally, the governments of 38 countries restrict their nationals’ movements by controlling access to critical documents such as passports, with 12 of these countries denying consular services like passport renewal or the issuance of birth or marriage certificates.
