No Excuses For Poverty After Stardom, Says Brown Ideye In Fiery Rant
According to Nivo News, former Super Eagles striker Brown Ideye has called on professional footballers to prioritize financial discipline, insisting that players who squander their wealth and end up broke after retirement deserve to face prison sentences. The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champion, who recently retired from international football, issued the advice through his official X account, urging active players to treat their salaries as a lifetime income earned within just a few years.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
“Footballers, start saving for your future from day one. No matter how small your salary is, put something aside for your retirement,” Ideye wrote, adding that athletes should also seek divine guidance for supportive people and trustworthy partners beyond their playing days.
The 35-year-old made the remarks while responding to an online discussion on players who fail to invest wisely. When a follower argued that professionals, especially those who played in Europe, have no excuse for financial hardship after retirement, Ideye replied: “They should be jailed for life if, after they retired from playing, they can’t feed themselves.”
The debate was triggered by former Nigerian defender Taribo West’s emotional outburst during the burial of late goalkeeper Peter Rufai on Friday, where he criticized both the Nigeria Football Federation and Lagos State Government for allegedly neglecting national football icons. West lamented that Rufai’s family was left without adequate support and recalled similar struggles faced by the families of Stephen Keshi, Rashidi Yekini, and Thompson Oliha.
“Could you imagine that the family would be crying just to solicit within our groups to ask for money? That is madness,” West said in a video that went viral on social media. His comments fueled widespread discussions about why some ex-internationals, despite lucrative European careers, fail to secure their financial future.
