FG Cracks Down On Education Fraud, Closes 22 Illegal Tertiary Schools

Details of the development were contained in the commission’s recent performance report, which also highlighted personnel audits and financial monitoring conducted across all 21 federal colleges of education.
President Bola Tinubu has previously directed regulatory agencies — including the National Universities Commission (NUC), the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), and the NCCE — to intensify efforts in identifying and closing illegal tertiary institutions. Speaking at the 14th convocation of the National Open University of Nigeria in Abuja, Tinubu, represented by Rakiya Ilyasu, Director of University Education at the Federal Ministry of Education, condemned “certificate millers” tarnishing the credibility of Nigeria’s academic system.
The President reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening coordination among education agencies such as the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the NUC, NBTE, and NCCE. He emphasized that the government would not tolerate institutions — local or foreign — issuing forged certificates or operating without approval, insisting that the integrity of the nation’s education system must be protected.
