Nigerian Bar Association Urges Full Support for Dangote Refinery Amidst Opposition
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has called for the full implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s directive on the supply of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery and modular refineries across Nigeria. During a recent visit to the refinery, NBA President Yakubu Maikyau, alongside other leaders and members of the association, expressed disappointment over the resistance the project has faced from fuel importers. These importers, according to the NBA, have stifled Nigeria’s economy by keeping it dependent on imported refined petroleum products, despite the country’s status as a leading crude oil producer.
Maikyau praised Aliko Dangote, the President and Chief Executive of the Dangote Group, for his steadfastness and resilience in the face of opposition. He referred to Dangote as a “freedom fighter and an economic warrior,” lauding his significant investments in Nigeria. Maikyau urged the Federal Government to create a supportive environment for the refinery, which he believes could transform Nigeria into a net exporter of refined petroleum products and alleviate the hardships caused by fuel scarcity.
The NBA President criticized the ongoing importation of crude oil by the refinery due to the lack of local supply, describing it as a shameful situation influenced by entrenched local interests. He called on the Federal Government to pay deliberate and conscious attention to the Dangote Refinery, highlighting the importance of creating an enabling environment for such people-centered investments.
Vice Chairman of the NBA’s Epe Branch, Ivo Takor, also commended the location of the refinery in the Ibeju-Lekki-Epe axis, emphasizing its potential to address Nigeria’s long-standing issue of fuel importation. Takor noted that the refinery could create jobs, boost foreign exchange, and save the country money currently spent on subsidizing petroleum products.
However, Takor also raised concerns about the existence of cartels that are allegedly working against the full operation of the refinery by withholding crude supplies. He praised President Tinubu for his directive on crude supply but stressed the need for strict monitoring to ensure compliance. He warned that failing to supply crude to the refinery constitutes sabotage against the nation and should be met with appropriate sanctions.
Devakumar Edwin, Vice President (Oil & Gas) at Dangote Industries Limited, informed the NBA delegates that the refinery was established primarily to source and refine local crude oil for Nigeria’s benefit. However, due to insufficient local crude supplies, the refinery has been forced to import crude from other countries while exporting refined petroleum products.
