Lagos State has reiterated its dedication to advancing legal services and ensuring access to justice through a series of strategic policies and initiatives. The state’s Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Lawal Pedro (SAN), highlighted these efforts during a breakout session titled “State Ministries of Justice in Focus: Advancing State Legal Services, Access to Justice, and the Rule of Law,” held on August 27, 2024, as part of the 64th NBA Annual General Conference.
The conference, hosted at Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Onikan, Lagos, centered on the theme “Pressing Forward: A National Posture for Rebuilding Nigeria.” Pedro, speaking on behalf of the Lagos State Ministry of Justice, underscored the government’s commitment to providing legal services to the state’s residents, particularly the indigent population, through the Office of the Public Defender (OPD). “This initiative ensures that vulnerable and underprivileged individuals have access to legal representation and advice, regardless of their status in the state,” Pedro stated.
In addition to legal aid, Pedro highlighted the role of the Citizens Mediation Centre (CMC) in offering alternative dispute resolution services. “This service is crucial for reducing the burden on the courts and providing quick and effective resolution to disputes,” he explained. This initiative aims to foster amicable settlements, thereby enhancing the efficiency of the legal process in Lagos.
Pedro also discussed the significant renovations and expansions undertaken in court facilities across the state, including the introduction of electronic filing systems and modern courtroom technology. These advancements are designed to boost the efficiency and effectiveness of the judiciary. Moreover, the ministry has implemented regular training programs for judiciary officers, prosecutors, police, and legal counsel, focusing on enhancing legal knowledge and keeping pace with new laws and technologies.
The Attorney General emphasized the ministry’s proactive stance in its anti-corruption drive, working closely with other agencies to promote transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct within the public service and beyond. “To uphold the rule of law, the ministry has been proactive in its anti-corruption drive, working closely with other agencies. These efforts are aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and ethical conduct within the public service and beyond,” Pedro affirmed.
During the Special “Lagos Day” at the conference, Pedro highlighted Lagos State’s cultural heritage and its strides in infrastructure, digital transformation, healthcare, education, and economic development. He emphasized that the event was an opportunity to showcase the state’s progress and attract local and international investors. “Lagos aims to showcase its progress and successes in various sectors. This provides an opportunity to demonstrate how the state is ‘Pressing Forward’ in line with the conference theme,” Pedro remarked.
The Justice Reform Summit held earlier this year was also referenced by Pedro. This summit brought together key stakeholders to discuss critical issues related to economic growth, investment protection, and security. Among the reforms discussed was the aim to resolve cases within two years and landlord-tenant disputes within three to six months. Pedro hinted at upcoming developments for magistrates, emphasizing the state’s commitment to equipping judicial officers with the tools and facilities necessary to perform their duties effectively.
The Special “Lagos Day” at the NBA Annual General Conference was deemed a resounding success, offering a blend of culture, innovation, and legal expertise, all infused with the vibrant energy of Lagos, “The Home of Aquatic Splendor.” The event not only showcased the state’s achievements but also provided a platform to highlight future opportunities, fostering economic growth and development in Lagos State.

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that the FCT University of Science and Technology in Abaji will begin operations during President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Wike made the revelation on Tuesday while on a thank-you tour of Abaji Area Council, appreciating residents for supporting Tinubu’s candidates in the February 21 FCT area council elections.
He noted that the FCT Administration is already putting in place the necessary infrastructure and essential facilities to ensure the university’s successful launch.
Wike urged the community to remain patient, assuring that the university would become a reality within Tinubu’s tenure.
“From our discussions, it is clear how significant this university is, not only for the people of Abaji but for all FCT residents. It will create jobs and drive development in the community. I would be honored to officially open the university for operations,” he said.
The minister emphasized that his visit was to thank residents for keeping their promise to support the President, highlighting the importance of acknowledging positive deeds.
Describing politics as a reciprocal process, Wike stressed that the era of empty promises was over:
“Leaders must demonstrate their commitment to delivering good governance. You cannot make promises during elections and vanish afterward without fulfilling them. We asked you to support Tinubu, starting with the area council elections. On February 21, you came through, delivering 133 of the 135 polling units in the council for Tinubu. What more can we say but thank you? You have done your part; we will now do ours. Abaji people have spoken, and they spoke decisively,” he said.
Wike also praised the outgoing Abaji Area Council Chairman, Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as a humble and dedicated leader.
