The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has taken decisive action to ensure the protection of legal rights for #EndBadGovernance protesters, directing its branches to monitor their trials and launching a Pro Bono initiative to provide legal support for those without representation.
Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe, SAN President of the NBA, announced this proactive measure on Wednesday, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rule of law and safeguarding human rights during these critical proceedings. The NBA has mobilized its Citizens’ Liberties Committee (NBA-CLC) to work closely with the Chairmen and Human Rights Committees of NBA branches in regions where protesters are currently facing prosecution.
“The Nigerian Bar Association legal teams are in courts and will continue to monitor proceedings to ensure that the rule of law is upheld, the human rights of defendants are protected, and justice is served,” Osigwe stated. The NBA’s legal teams will actively oversee court proceedings to guarantee that trials adhere strictly to due process, ensuring that the legal rights of all defendants are fully protected.
This initiative comes in response to growing concerns from human rights groups and legal practitioners regarding the fairness and transparency of the ongoing trials. By providing legal assistance through its Pro Bono support initiative, the NBA aims to prevent any miscarriage of justice and ensure that all defendants receive fair treatment under the law.
