Nigeria Police Denies Tenure Extension for Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, Clarifies Misleading Reports....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The Nigeria Police Force has strongly denied claims that President Bola Tinubu extended the tenure of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun. The police clarified that IGP Egbetokun’s appointment letter explicitly grants him a four-year tenure, eliminating any need for him to lobby for an extension.

In a statement released by ACP Muyiwa Adejobi, the Nigeria Police spokesperson, the force emphasized that misinformation circulating on social media and certain news outlets is false. Adejobi explained that President Tinubu approved the appointment based on the law governing the tenure of the office. The IGP’s appointment was confirmed by the Police Council, and the letter issued on November 3, 2023, states that Egbetokun will serve for four years in line with Section 215(a) and Section 28(c) of the Nigerian Constitution.

Senate Amends Police Act Amidst Tenure Debate

The issue of tenure extension has been a hot topic since the Senate passed a bill on July 23, amending the Police Act of 2020. The amendment introduced a new clause in Section 8, contradicting the general rule that public servants must retire after 35 years of service or upon reaching the age of 60. The revised law states that every police officer shall serve for 40 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.

This new clause stirred debates, with top police officers reportedly opposing the extension of the IGP’s tenure. The controversy surrounding the IGP’s term is further fueled by accusations against Egbetokun, including alleged human rights violations tied to the #EndBadGovernance protests.

Nigeria Police Sets the Record Straight

Adejobi’s statement sought to clarify the situation, highlighting that the President did not grant any special extension to Egbetokun. Instead, the appointment follows the legal framework, and the circulating rumors of a three-year extension are false. “Contrary to the misinformation, the IGP has not exhausted his years in office. He has a clear four-year mandate, as stated in the appointment letter, which was approved by the Police Council,” Adejobi said.

Adejobi further criticized the spread of false information, accusing certain individuals of attempting to malign the office of the IGP for personal or financial gain. He reiterated that there is no need for Egbetokun to lobby for an extension, as his appointment still stands in accordance with the law.

Misinformation and Public Concerns

The ongoing debate over the IGP’s tenure and the Police Act amendment has sparked public concern, particularly in light of reports that suggest the extension of Egbetokun’s term. These reports, which cite anonymous sources from the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, claimed that President Tinubu had approved an additional three years for the IGP despite the fact that Egbetokun turned 60 on September 4, 2023.

However, the Nigeria Police Force’s clear stance on the matter refutes these rumors, maintaining that the IGP’s tenure remains within the confines of his four-year appointment as specified by law.
