The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has taken a significant step in addressing the issue of counterfeit drugs by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Counter Terrorism Centre. This partnership aims to prevent the distribution of illegal medicines used for criminal activities, including terrorism and banditry, across Nigeria.
In a statement released on Friday, NAFDAC’s Director-General, Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, emphasized the importance of this collaboration in the fight against counterfeit drugs and the protection of public health. She highlighted that the MoU aligns with the National Action Plan, specifically designed to curb the misuse of medicines by non-state actors involved in violent extremism.
A Strategic Move to Protect Youth and Public Health
Professor Adeyeye explained that the MoU plays a crucial role in reducing the death toll among youths, a vulnerable demographic often impacted by dangerous substances. The agreement ensures that potential chemical threats, which could pose serious health risks, are effectively managed. Moreover, the collaboration aims to prevent the use of hazardous chemicals for malicious purposes, such as the development of weapons of mass destruction.
Enhancing National Security
The National Counter Terrorism Centre, housed within the Office of the National Security Adviser, will be instrumental in addressing the criminal challenges tied to the distribution of counterfeit drugs. Adamu-Garba Laka, the Centre’s National Coordinator, remarked that this partnership represents a united front in the fight against terrorism. “By combining our efforts and forging a united front against terrorism, we are better equipped to confront this multifaceted challenge and uphold the safety and security of our country,” Laka said.
Strengthening the Fight Against Counterfeit Drugs
This MoU marks a critical step toward ensuring the safety and security of Nigeria’s citizens. Through coordinated efforts between NAFDAC and the National Counter Terrorism Centre, the country is better positioned to combat the circulation of harmful substances that fuel criminal activities. The partnership is expected to create more robust systems for identifying and eliminating counterfeit drugs, ultimately leading to a healthier, safer Nigeria.
