Traders and stakeholders of the Computer Village Market in Lagos have issued a stern warning to Chief Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, urging her to cease any interference in the market’s affairs. The warning comes in light of a valid judgment from the Lagos State High Court, which permanently restrained her from imposing and collecting levies from market members.

In a pre-action notice dated August 28, 2024, the traders, represented by Falana & Falana’s Chambers, reminded Tinubu-Ojo, the daughter of President Bola Tinubu, of the court ruling delivered on December 8, 2020. The court’s decision prohibited her and her agents from imposing any levies on the market’s members, a directive the traders claim she has repeatedly violated.

The traders accused Tinubu-Ojo of multiple rights violations, including the instigation of thugs and unauthorized levy collections. They warned that failure to comply with the court’s judgment would compel them to pursue all available legal remedies against her, including seeking costs. The notice, signed by legal representatives Taiwo E. Olawanle and Adebayo A. Oniyelu, emphasized the need for Tinubu-Ojo to adhere to the court’s decision.

“Our client is registered under Part ‘C’ of the Company and Allied Matters Act,” the letter stated, describing the collective associations representing the traders. These include the Phone and Allied Products Dealers Association of Nigeria (PAPDA), Computer and Allied Products Dealers of Nigeria, and several other allied associations.

The letter further accused Tinubu-Ojo of disregarding the court’s orders by continuing to interfere in the market’s internal affairs, including disrupting lawful gatherings and making unauthorized demands from the traders’ partners. “Despite the above final order made by a competent court, you continue to meddle in the internal affairs of our client by instigating thugs and contacting our client’s partners to obtain money from them thereby denying our client its revenue,” the letter continued.

The traders also pointed out that Mrs. Abisola Azeez, who parades as the Iyaloja of Computer Village under Tinubu-Ojo’s sanction, has no shop or stake in the market. They noted that while membership in the association is open to any interested trader, such individuals must follow the proper procedures to be enrolled.

The notice also challenged the legal basis of Tinubu-Ojo’s actions, highlighting that her powers under the Lagos State Market Advisory Council Law are strictly advisory and do not include imposing levies or interfering in market operations. The traders emphasized that Computer Village is not covered by the markets contemplated under the law Tinubu-Ojo purportedly derives her power from.

The traders referenced the 2020 High Court judgment, in which Justice Y. R. Pinheiro ruled that the imposition of levies by Tinubu-Ojo and her associates was illegal, null, and void. The judgment permanently restrained her and her agents from imposing any levies on the market’s members.
