The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Education Loan Fund, Akintunde Sawyerr, has proposed that recipients of the Federal Government’s student loan program should repay their loans two years after completing the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program. In an interview on Politics Today on Channels Television, Sawyerr emphasized the importance of timely repayment to accommodate other aspiring beneficiaries. Despite acknowledging the challenge posed by the country’s high youth unemployment rate, Sawyerr highlighted the government’s efforts to mitigate this issue through various initiatives. He emphasized that loans are essential for individuals to enhance their education and secure well-paying jobs post-NYSC, facilitating loan repayment. Sawyerr reassured that no collateral would be required, and the loan amount would be determined based on the student’s field of study. While acknowledging the difficulties associated with loan repayment, Sawyerr expressed optimism that President Bola Tinubu’s administration would introduce the program, addressing existing challenges as it progresses.
