The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Y.D. Ahmed, has assured Corps Members that their monthly allowance will be increased once the Nigerian government implements the new minimum wage for civil servants.
This assurance was made public through a press statement released on Wednesday by Caroline Embu, NYSC’s Acting Director of Information and Public Relations. The announcement followed the DG’s visit to the Kebbi State Orientation Camp in Dakingari and the Sokoto State Orientation Camp in Wamakko, where he addressed Corps Members.
Brigadier General Ahmed praised the Corps Members for their significant contributions to Nigeria’s socio-economic development, noting that their efforts are invaluable. He encouraged them to use their service year to not only contribute to the nation but also to focus on personal development and future planning.
In his address, the DG urged Corps Members to take full advantage of the NYSC Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) program, which is designed to equip them with vocational skills that promote self-reliance. “At least learn a skill while in camp, and after the Orientation Course, continue with the post-camp training,” he advised, highlighting the importance of acquiring skills that can lead to job creation and entrepreneurship.
The statement also emphasized the NYSC’s collaboration with several reputable organizations, including the Central Bank of Nigeria, Bank of Industry, Unity Bank, Access Bank, and NNPC Foundation. These partnerships have been instrumental in providing loans and grants to support Corps Members in their entrepreneurial endeavors.
Additionally, Brigadier General Ahmed reassured Corps Members that their safety is a top priority, stating that the NYSC would not post anyone to areas where their security could be compromised. He also advised them to remain vigilant and security-conscious at all times.
During his visit, the Kebbi State Coordinator, Mrs. Aghata Banki Okolo, reported that 1,195 Corps Members had been registered at the camp, including 1,077 for Kebbi and 118 dislodged from Zamfara State. She commended the positive response of the Corps Members to camp activities and the effective use of emotional intelligence by the 240 camp officials.
Similarly, the Sokoto State Coordinator, Alhaji Yakubu Yaro Usman, informed the DG that the Corps Members had shown a high level of discipline and had adapted well to the camp environment. The Sokoto camp currently hosts 1,488 Corps Members, including 682 males and 606 females, alongside an additional 200 Corps Members dislodged from Zamfara State.
