Bill Gates, Co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, has shed light on why Nigeria receives the largest share of the foundation’s intervention funds allocated to Africa. Speaking during the 2024 NutriVision Dialogue in Abuja, Gates emphasized the critical needs of Nigeria’s large population as the driving force behind this focus.
“We spend a lot in Asia, but we spend even more in Africa. The country where we spend the most in Africa is Nigeria,” Gates stated during an interview with selected journalists. “That makes sense because of the population and the incredible needs that are here. That means that I’ve literally spent billions in Nigeria.”
Gates highlighted that, while progress has been made in reducing child mortality rates in Nigeria, there is still much more to be done. The foundation’s top priorities include reducing global health inequalities and eradicating diseases such as measles, malaria, and polio. Gates also mentioned that the foundation plans to increase its spending in the coming years, with a particular focus on strengthening primary healthcare systems.
“Our work is almost entirely focused on primary healthcare because the impact per dollar is dramatically greater than anywhere else,” he explained.
Beyond healthcare, the Gates Foundation is deeply invested in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, recognizing its pivotal role in the country’s economic development. Gates underscored the importance of providing farmers with access to high-yield, climate-resistant seeds, fertilizers, timely information, and accurate weather predictions. These measures, he noted, are essential for boosting agricultural productivity and reducing food costs.
The foundation also supports initiatives for food fortification, which aims to enhance the nutritional quality of staple foods. This effort, according to Gates, is crucial for addressing malnutrition and improving public health outcomes. He stressed the importance of making low-cost, nutritious foods, particularly milk and eggs, more accessible to combat malnutrition in Nigeria.
Since its establishment in 2000, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has partnered with African regional institutions, national governments, and local communities in 49 African countries, working to advance health, agriculture, and economic development. With its continued commitment to Nigeria, the foundation aims to leverage innovative ideas and tools to make substantial strides in reducing malnutrition and improving the overall well-being of its population.
