No Politics Or Religion In National Stadiums — Shaibu Demands.
Philip Shaibu, Director-General and CEO of the National Institute for Sports (NIS), has called for an immediate ban on political and religious activities at the MKO Abiola National Stadium and all other national stadiums in Nigeria.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
In a statement released by his Special Assistant on Media, Ben Ogbemudia, Shaibu warned that using sports facilities for non-sporting events is speeding up their deterioration. He emphasized that stadiums were built primarily for athlete training and development and must be preserved for that purpose.
Shaibu recalled his time as Deputy Governor of Edo State, when he oversaw the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium and ensured the athletics track was properly maintained while still under warranty. He noted that the stadium’s condition worsened after conflicts with former Edo State governor Godwin Obaseki, culminating in a concert by Nigerian singer Rema.
“The event allowed heavy vehicles and equipment onto the pitch, causing damage and violating the contractor’s warranty agreement,” Shaibu said. He added that the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium can no longer host international matches without major repairs.
He urged the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to collaborate with the NIS to safeguard and restore sports infrastructure across the country.
