A recent mass screening conducted by Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) in collaboration with Nigeria’s Ministry of Health has revealed a staggering health crisis in the Northwest region of Nigeria. The report indicates that one in four children under the age of five is malnourished, particularly in Zamfara state, where areas like Shinkafi and Zurmi are severely affected.

Alarming Malnutrition Rates

The screening, carried out in June 2024, involved 97,149 children across 21 locations. The findings show that 27% of these children are acutely malnourished, with 5% suffering from severe acute malnutrition. These figures far exceed the critical malnutrition thresholds set by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Urgent Need for Action

MSF has called for immediate action from Nigeria’s health authorities, international organizations, and donors to tackle the growing malnutrition crisis in Zamfara state and northwest Nigeria. This region has been notably excluded from the United Nations Humanitarian Response Plan, which compounds the challenges faced by local communities.

The report also highlights that approximately 22% of the children screened are moderately malnourished. The situation is exacerbated by a significant shortage of essential nutritional supplies, as UNICEF suspended its aid earlier this year. This gap in humanitarian support risks worsening the conditions of moderately malnourished children, pushing them towards severe acute malnutrition without prompt intervention.

A Catastrophic Situation

Abdullahi Mohammad, an MSF representative in Nigeria, described the current response to the malnutrition crisis as “catastrophic.” He emphasized the need for immediate treatment for moderate acute malnutrition, stating, “We are essentially allowing more children to fall into life-threatening conditions.”

MSF operates four inpatient and 17 outpatient facilities in local government areas, including Shinkafi and Zurmi. From January to July 2024, MSF has treated over 7,000 children, marking a 34% increase in admissions compared to the same period last year. In Shinkafi and Zurmi, admissions have surged by 50%, while at the Gummi facility, admissions nearly doubled in July compared to the previous year.

The Impact of Infectious Diseases

The malnutrition crisis is further complicated by high incidences of vaccine-preventable diseases such as measles. MSF has reported treating at least 5,700 cases of measles in Zamfara this year. Malnutrition makes children more vulnerable to these infectious diseases, creating a vicious cycle where malnourished children are at an increased risk of severe illness and death.

Voices from the Ground

Hafsat Lawal, a mother receiving treatment for her child at an MSF facility in Zamfara, shared her distressing experience: “When I first brought my son to the hospital, I didn’t know if he would survive. At home, due to insecurity, we don’t have access to food. Prices have more than doubled, and we can’t afford to buy grains.”

The ongoing violence in Zamfara has severely hampered communities’ access to healthcare, with only about 200 out of 700 healthcare centers functioning as of 2023. Healthcare workers face immense challenges in reaching these centers, further complicating the situation.

Despite the severity of the crisis, coordinated humanitarian responses have largely overlooked northwest Nigeria. It is crucial for health authorities, international organizations, and donors to urgently ramp up their efforts. Expanding healthcare facilities to provide essential inpatient care and ensuring a steady supply of therapeutic food from UNICEF are critical steps needed to address this crisis and save lives.
