UNICEF underscores the importance of continuing education efforts to inform girls and women about the harmful consequences of FGM. Research shows that daughters of educated mothers are less likely to undergo FGM, highlighting the pivotal role of education in preventing this harmful practice.

Female genital mutilation, as defined by the World Health Organization, involves the partial or complete removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. This practice poses significant health risks, including severe bleeding, urinary problems, infections, and childbirth complications.

FGM is recognized globally as a violation of human rights, primarily affecting girls and women in Africa, the Middle East, and Asia. It is often performed on minors by traditional practitioners, constituting a grave violation of children’s rights.

According to UNICEF data, over 200 million girls and women have undergone FGM, primarily in 30 countries where the practice is prevalent. The health complications resulting from FGM impose significant financial burdens on healthcare systems, highlighting the urgent need for action to end this practice.

In Nigeria, UNICEF reports that FGM prevalence is particularly high in the Southeast and Southwest regions, with alarming rates in states like Ekiti and Oyo.

UNICEF emphasizes the power of education in raising awareness and fostering social change to end FGM. Educated women are more likely to question and reject harmful cultural practices, creating a ripple effect in their communities.

Celine Lafoucriere, Chief of UNICEF Lagos Office, emphasizes the need for increased awareness, advocacy, and legal measures to combat FGM. She underscores the importance of promoting alternative cultural practices that uphold the rights and dignity of girls.

UNICEF Child Protection Specialist, Denis Onoise, emphasizes the importance of holistic support for survivors of FGM, including health, education, social services, and justice interventions. Empowering survivors to become advocates for change is crucial in the fight against FGM.
