NDLEA Seizes Drugs Hidden In Jackets, Cartons, And Cream At Lagos Airport.

Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) have intercepted large quantities of opioids, cannabis, and methamphetamine at Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Ikeja and at a Lagos-based courier firm.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi, two suspects bound for Italy were arrested in separate operations, with the drugs cleverly concealed in everyday items such as body cream containers, winter jackets, and carton walls.

One of the suspects, 37-year-old Friday Ehianuka, was caught on March 20 attempting to board an Ethiopian Airlines flight to Rome with 2,698 tramadol 225mg pills hidden in containers of skin lightening cream. Ehianuka, a Milan resident, admitted he was to receive payment in Euros for successfully trafficking the consignment.

In another bust at Lagos airport on March 18, Christian Agbonhese was intercepted while trying to board a Lufthansa flight to Milan. A search of his luggage revealed 28,470 opioid pills, including 23,150 tramadol 225mg, 4,000 tapentadol 250mg, and 1,320 tramadol 100mg tablets, all concealed in two large winter jackets.

NDLEA officers also seized 1kg of Loud cannabis hidden in a carton shipped from the United States and intercepted 158 grams of methamphetamine concealed in carton walls destined for New Zealand.

In Kano State, Abdulkadir Mamuda (35) and Uche Johnson Festus (47) were arrested with 102.5kg and 95.5kg of skunk cannabis, respectively. In Lagos, a raid on a storage facility in Ijora recovered over 21,000 bottles of codeine-based syrup, with two more suspects arrested on the Third Mainland Bridge transporting additional bottles.

In Oyo State, Bankole Bari was caught on March 17 in Ibarapa LGA with 71.2kg of skunk smuggled from Benin via the Oyan River. Along the Kaduna-Zaria highway, NDLEA recovered 586,000 tramadol and Exol-5 pills from Lawal Anas (28) and 7,290 tramadol 225mg tablets from Musa Shuaibu (22).

In Taraba State, Aliyu Adamu (26) was intercepted transporting 77,660 tramadol capsules to Gombe. Meanwhile, in Adamawa State, six suspects—including Ramatu Aliyu, Jungudo Abdullahi, Najid Abdullahi, Musa Mohammed, Usman Abdulrahim, and another Musa Mohammed—were arrested following the seizure of 82.8kg of tramadol in Yola on March 17.

NDLEA emphasized that these arrests and seizures were part of ongoing operations to curb drug trafficking across Nigeria.

Each pilgrim is allowed two checked bags of 23kg each and one hand luggage piece up to 8kg. Pilgrims were explicitly warned against packing water or other restricted items.

  • Call for Cooperation: The Commissioner urged all pilgrims to exercise patience and collaborate with officials throughout the return phase, reassuring them that everything is being managed to ensure a successful airlift.

  • Commendations: Reflecting on the overall success of the Hajj exercise, Layode expressed his gratitude to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat for their essential support. He also recognized the efforts of the Special Adviser on Islamic Matters and 2026 Hajj Ad-hoc Committee Chairman, Ahmad Abdullahi Jebe, alongside the committee members, board staff, and the various Hajj guides and scholars who worked to ensure a seamless experience.
