“China To Lift Tariffs For 53 African Nations Starting May 1 – Xi Jinping”.

China will remove tariffs on imports from nearly all African countries starting May 1, a move expected to significantly reshape trade between Beijing and the continent.

Chinese state media reported that President Xi Jinping made the announcement on Saturday, confirming that 53 African nations with diplomatic ties to China will benefit from zero tariffs.

The only exception is Eswatini, which recognizes Taiwan instead of Beijing. China considers Taiwan part of its territory and has repeatedly stated that it does not rule out using force to assert control over the island.

Prior to this, China already had a zero-tariff policy for imports from 33 African countries. Last year, Chinese officials indicated that the policy would be expanded to include all African diplomatic partners, and Saturday’s announcement confirms that the expansion will take effect in May.

China is Africa’s largest trading partner and has invested heavily across the continent through its Belt and Road Initiative, funding railways, ports, highways, and energy projects.

The tariff removal comes as many African nations reassess their global trade relationships. Some countries have been exploring alternative markets following sweeping tariffs imposed worldwide by former U.S. President Donald Trump last year, which triggered shifts in trade patterns.

President Xi said the zero-tariff policy “will undoubtedly provide new opportunities for African development,” revealing the timeline as African leaders gathered in Addis Ababa for the annual African Union summit.

But in a statement, APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, accusing the governor of misleading the public and shifting blame.

The party alleged that Adeleke was responsible for the salary issues, claiming he refused to release electronic payment vouchers and other financial documents needed for processing payments.
