70-Year-Old, 3 Others Arrested For Attempted Murder, Cult Activities In Akwa Ibom

Operatives of the Akwa Ibom State Command of the Nigeria Police Force have arrested a 70-year-old man and three others for alleged attempted murder and cult-related activities in Uruk Anam Local Government Area.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

The suspects were apprehended following credible intelligence, as part of efforts to curb violent crimes and restore order in the area, the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Timfon John, stated in Uyo on Friday.

The arrested individuals are Okon Akpan, 70; John Samson, 45; Emmanuel Asuquo, 50; and Idorenyin Umoh, 22. They were detained on March 20, 2026, at Ikot Asukpong Village after the police acted on a petition concerning attempted murder, malicious damage, and cult activities.

“The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has achieved a significant operational breakthrough in its ongoing fight against violent crimes and criminal elements,” the statement read.

The operation also led to the recovery of weapons, including one locally fabricated pistol and two long guns, strengthening the case against the suspects.

“The command wishes to assure the public that the situation in the area remains calm and under control, with proactive measures in place to prevent any breach of peace,” DSP John added.

Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the suspected gang, and the arrested individuals will be charged to court upon completion of investigations.

The Osun State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has responded to claims by Governor Ademola Adeleke that local government officials under the party diverted about ₦300 billion meant for workers’ salaries.

Adeleke had made the allegation during a stakeholders’ meeting, accusing APC-controlled council officials of hijacking funds and forcing the state government to shoulder salary payments for local government workers, teachers, health staff, and pensioners for over a year.

He insisted he would not abandon workers, blaming the situation for delays in executing some state projects.

But in a statement, APC’s Director of Media and Information, Kola Olabisi, dismissed the claims, accusing the governor of misleading the public and shifting blame.

The party alleged that Adeleke was responsible for the salary issues, claiming he refused to release electronic payment vouchers and other financial documents needed for processing payments.

APC also said pension-related records, leave bonuses, cooperative deductions, and other financial data had not been made available despite repeated appeals, insisting that funds were properly accounted for and available for use if approved.

The party urged pensioners and workers to seek clarification, insisting the situation could be resolved if the governor allowed due process to take place.
