Kalu made the clarification while reacting to comments by Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, concerning alleged election riggers in the South-East. Speaking to journalists at his country home in Igbere on Thursday, the former governor maintained that his electoral victories have always been secured through the genuine votes of the people.
The senator expressed confidence that the continued support of his constituents would guarantee his re-election, stressing that both his past tenure as governor and his current position in the Senate were not products of manipulation or rigging.
He stated that he has consistently upheld the democratic process and believes that only the will of the electorate should determine electoral outcomes.
Kalu also accused Governor Otti of permitting his media aides to launch personal attacks against him on social media platforms, describing the alleged campaign as unnecessary and misleading.
In a related development, the lawmaker recently claimed that Otti would not have emerged as governor without his intervention during the 2023 governorship election. A statement issued by Kalu’s media office and signed by his spokesperson, George Maduka, alleged that the governor personally visited Kalu’s residence in Igbere late at night on the eve of the election.
The statement further asserted that key figures involved in the Labour Party’s campaign in Abia State, including the party’s state coordinator at the time, Umeh Kalu, were aware of discussions held with Senator Kalu concerning the governorship contest.
It questioned the credibility of claims portraying the senator as politically irrelevant, arguing that such intervention would not have been sought if those assertions were accurate.
