PDP Splits Deeply Over Impeachment Plot Against Rivers Governor Fubara.
A deep rift has surfaced within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the ongoing impeachment proceedings against Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, as rival factions within the party take opposing positions on the development, according to Nivo News.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The impeachment process was initiated on Thursday by the Rivers State House of Assembly following allegations of gross misconduct brought against Governor Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu. During a plenary session presided over by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, the allegations were formally read, marking the commencement of constitutional procedures. A total of 26 lawmakers reportedly endorsed the impeachment notice, citing actions they claim are inconsistent with constitutional provisions.
A faction of the PDP aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has openly supported the impeachment move. Speaking in an interview, Jungudo Haruna, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP National Caretaker Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed, stated that Governor Fubara no longer enjoys the party’s backing, asserting that his alleged move toward the All Progressives Congress (APC) effectively severed his ties with the PDP.
Haruna maintained that the impeachment process should not be interpreted as a political vendetta but as a constitutional exercise necessitated by serious allegations, including claims of financial mismanagement and abuse of office. He urged the governor to clear his name through due process and commended the Rivers State House of Assembly for what he described as an independent legislative action in line with the principles of separation of powers.
He further stressed that the process should proceed peacefully and transparently, expressing confidence that justice would ultimately prevail.
However, the PDP National Working Committee (NWC), under the leadership of Kabiru Turaki, has adopted a more restrained posture. The committee has so far declined to issue an official statement on the matter.
Commenting on the party’s position, Ini Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the Turaki-led NWC, said the leadership is closely observing developments in Rivers State and has chosen to withhold its reaction pending further assessment of the situation.
