The win sealed Nigeria’s qualification for the quarter-finals of the tournament, but attention quickly shifted to an incident midway through the second half involving Osimhen, who appeared visibly frustrated with what he perceived as wasteful play in the attacking third.

The Galatasaray forward was seen expressing his displeasure toward Lookman and Bright Osayi-Samuel, while also brushing aside an attempt by team captain Wilfred Ndidi to calm him down. Moments later, Osimhen signalled to the technical bench, requesting to be substituted.

Tensions reportedly lingered after the final whistle, as Osimhen declined to participate in the team’s customary post-match prayers and lap of appreciation with supporters, instead heading directly to the dressing room alone.

Although Lookman later played down the incident during his post-match media briefing, sections of the fanbase criticised Osimhen’s conduct, describing it as unnecessary and disruptive to team unity.

However, speaking on the Obi One Podcast, Mikel Obi came to the striker’s defence, describing Osimhen as a passionate and fiercely competitive player whose style is driven by intensity and a desire to win. He noted that such aggression is often embraced in top-level football environments and helps players push themselves to higher standards.

Mikel explained that Osimhen’s frustration stemmed from a striker’s natural hunger for goals, particularly when chasing a hat-trick, adding that such moments are common during high-stakes matches. He argued that on-pitch disagreements reflect a winning mentality and should not be mistaken for indiscipline.

The former Super Eagles captain further stated that Nigerian football has long lacked such visible intensity, stressing that success at elite levels often requires players to challenge each other during matches, while resolving differences off the pitch.

Despite his strong support, Mikel acknowledged that Osimhen’s reaction after the confrontation could have been handled better. He expressed disappointment that the striker appeared to withdraw from the game and left the pitch early without acknowledging his teammates.

Mikel emphasized that while Osimhen’s aggression and warrior-like approach should be preserved, it must be carefully managed to ensure team harmony, reminding players that no individual is bigger than the national team.
