LASRRA Director Dies in Road Accident Four Days Before Retirement
LAGOS — A senior official of the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA), Mrs. Serifat Olubukola Talabi, has died in a road accident just four days before her scheduled retirement from public service and 60th birthday celebration.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Talabi, who served as Director of Procurement at LASRRA, was reportedly hit by a vehicle along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway near the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Camp in Ibafo, Ogun State, on October 18. Witnesses said she died instantly at the scene.
The late official was set to retire on October 22, 2025, after years of service to the Lagos State Government. Invitations had already been distributed for a joint event marking her 60th birthday, retirement, and thanksgiving ceremony, which was scheduled to take place at the NERDC Conference Centre in Ikeja.
In a statement issued by LASRRA’s Public Relations Officer, Basirat Lawal, the agency described Talabi’s death as a “devastating loss.” Lawal said staff members were still in shock over the incident. “She came to the office on Friday, cheerful as always. Everything was set for her retirement celebration next week. We are heartbroken,” the statement read.
Talabi joined the Lagos State Civil Service over two decades ago and rose through the ranks to become a director. Colleagues described her as hardworking, humble, and committed to her duties. “She was a pillar in the agency and a mentor to many younger officers,” a coworker said.
Family members said funeral arrangements have been fixed, with a wake scheduled for October 23 and burial to follow on October 24 at her residence in Ibafo, Ogun State.
Her death has sparked renewed concern over pedestrian and motorist safety along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest highways. The road, which connects Lagos to several southwestern states, has been the site of numerous fatal accidents in recent years. Road safety advocates have repeatedly called for better pedestrian infrastructure and stricter enforcement of traffic laws along the route.
Officials from LASRRA and the Lagos State Government are expected to attend the burial to honor Talabi’s service to the state. She was known for overseeing several procurement reforms and contributed to improving administrative processes within the agency.
Talabi’s passing just days before her planned retirement has left friends, family, and colleagues mourning a dedicated civil servant who spent much of her life in public service. Her death also serves as a tragic reminder of the dangers facing commuters and pedestrians on Nigeria’s highways.
Authorities have not released details about the driver involved in the accident, and investigations are reportedly ongoing.
As the Lagos State Civil Service prepares to bid farewell to one of its own, colleagues say they will remember Talabi not only for her professionalism but also for her kindness and dedication. “She gave her all to her work,” one senior official said. “It is painful that she did not live to enjoy the retirement she so richly deserved.”
Her legacy, they added, will continue to inspire others within the Lagos State public service system.
