Tinubu Calls for Community-Based Security Committees Across Nigeria

Speaking at a meeting with traditional rulers and security officials in Abuja, Tinubu said the initiative is part of his administration’s broader plan to improve security coordination and restore public confidence in local governance. He emphasized that lasting peace must begin within communities.
“The best way to secure our country is to empower our communities,” Tinubu said. “We must build local systems that can identify problems early, promote dialogue, and prevent violence before it starts.”
Grassroots Approach
Tinubu explained that the new committees would include traditional rulers, youth representatives, women leaders, and local government officials. Their primary responsibility would be to identify potential threats, mediate disputes, and work with law enforcement agencies to maintain peace.
He added that community engagement is essential in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges, which include terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings. “Security cannot be left only to the police or the military,” Tinubu said. “Every Nigerian has a role to play, especially those who know their communities best.”
The president also linked the initiative to economic and social development, saying that unemployment and poverty contribute to insecurity. He called for greater investment in education, skills training, and job creation, especially for young people and women, to reduce vulnerability to crime and violence.
Background on Security Challenges
Nigeria has faced growing insecurity in recent years, with attacks by armed groups, bandit gangs, and kidnappers affecting several regions. The northeast continues to struggle with the Boko Haram insurgency, while the northwest has seen waves of banditry and mass abductions. Communal clashes and farmer-herder conflicts have also escalated in central and southern states.
