NBA Condemns Kano Court Order Directing TikTokers to Marry Within 60 Days
Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has condemned a reported order by a Kano Magistrate’s Court directing two popular TikTok content creators, Idris Mai Wushirya and Basira Yar Guda, to marry each other within 60 days.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
According to reports, Magistrate Halima Wali of the Kano Magistrate Court allegedly issued the order after the pair were charged with producing and sharing videos considered “indecent” by the Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board. The court reportedly instructed the Hisbah Board, Kano’s moral enforcement agency, to ensure the marriage takes place within the set period.
In a statement released on Tuesday, NBA President Afam Osigwe (SAN) described the directive as “a gross abuse of judicial power” and “a violation of the individuals’ constitutional rights.” He said the reported order goes against Nigeria’s Constitution, which guarantees freedom, dignity, and personal liberty to every citizen.
“No court in Nigeria has the power to compel anyone to marry another person,” Osigwe said. “Marriage is a voluntary union between consenting adults. Any judicial or administrative order to force such a union is unconstitutional, illegal, and unacceptable.”
The NBA called the reported ruling “an embarrassment to the justice system” and demanded an immediate review of the case. It also urged the National Judicial Council (NJC) to investigate the circumstances surrounding the order and take disciplinary action if misconduct is confirmed.
The controversy began after videos featuring Mai Wushirya and Yar Guda went viral on TikTok, showing playful and romantic exchanges between the two. The Kano State Films and Video Censorship Board accused them of violating moral standards and filed a complaint to the magistrate’s court. The alleged marriage directive came as part of the court’s judgment.
Human rights groups and social media users have joined the NBA in condemning the reported order, describing it as “bizarre” and “a violation of basic human freedoms.” Many Nigerians have questioned how a marriage could serve as punishment for alleged indecency.
