Nigerian Military Captures Wanted IPOB Commander ‘Gentle’ and Eight Others in Imo, Ebonyi
Nigerian military has arrested a wanted commander of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), known as “Gentle,” along with eight of his accomplices during coordinated operations in Imo and Ebonyi states, officials said Thursday.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Maj. Gen. Magnus Kangye, Director of Defence Media Operations, announced the arrests in Abuja while briefing journalists on recent military activities across the country. He said troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation UDO KA, carried out the operations between Oct. 8 and Oct. 13.
According to Kangye, the troops conducted raids in Owerri West and Mbaitoli Local Government Areas of Imo State, as well as in Izzi and Ohaukwu Local Government Areas of Ebonyi State. The operations led to the arrest of the IPOB commander “Gentle” and eight members of his group believed to be responsible for several violent attacks in the region.
“The troops recovered various weapons, ammunition, and vehicles from the suspects,” Kangye said. “These arrests mark another success in our ongoing operations to dismantle criminal and terrorist networks threatening peace in the Southeast.”
In a related operation on Oct. 13, troops arrested a woman believed to be a logistics supplier for IPOB’s armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), in Abia State. Military sources said she was found in possession of three children, who were later identified as the biological children of another wanted IPOB commander known as “Emergency.”
Kangye said the woman was suspected of providing supplies, funds, and communication support to IPOB and ESN members hiding in remote areas. She is currently in military custody for further interrogation.
The Defence Headquarters said investigations are ongoing to identify the network of collaborators and safe houses used by the separatist group. The arrested individuals will be handed over to relevant security agencies for prosecution.
The Indigenous People of Biafra is a separatist organization seeking to establish an independent state of Biafra in southeastern Nigeria. Its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, has been in detention since 2021, facing charges of treasonable felony and terrorism. The group’s armed wing, ESN, has been blamed for several attacks on security personnel, government facilities, and civilians in parts of the Southeast.
In recent months, the Nigerian military has increased operations in the region under Operation UDO KA, aimed at restoring peace and countering violent activities linked to IPOB and ESN. Several camps have been destroyed, and dozens of suspected militants have been arrested or neutralized.
Security analysts say the capture of “Gentle” could weaken IPOB’s command structure and disrupt planned attacks. However, they warn that the group may attempt retaliatory strikes or reorganize its operations.
“This is a major breakthrough for the Nigerian military,” said security analyst Chinedu Eze. “But lasting peace will depend on sustained security presence and community cooperation to prevent these groups from regrouping.”
Residents in parts of Imo and Ebonyi welcomed the news, expressing hope that the arrests would bring relief after months of insecurity. Many local communities have faced curfews, market closures, and attacks blamed on gunmen claiming allegiance to IPOB.
The Defence Headquarters urged citizens to continue providing useful information to security agencies to help identify criminal hideouts.
“The Armed Forces of Nigeria will not relent until peace and stability are fully restored in every part of the country,” Kangye said.
Authorities said further details about the investigation and possible charges against the suspects will be released in the coming days.
The arrests mark another milestone in Nigeria’s effort to curb separatist violence in the Southeast, where security forces continue to face sporadic ambushes and attacks.
If confirmed through prosecution, the capture of “Gentle” and his associates could represent a turning point in the government’s campaign to weaken IPOB’s armed operations and restore public confidence in the region.
