Wike Blasts AMAC Chairman For ‘Selling’ Street Names, Orders Refund Of Payments.

Published

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned the Chairman of the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC), Christopher Maikalangu, against the unauthorized naming of streets and roads constructed by the FCT Administration in exchange for money.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

According to Nivo News, Wike issued the warning on Wednesday during the flag-off ceremony for the provision of engineering infrastructure in the Guzape AO9 and Asokoro AIT neighborhood districts. The minister, visibly displeased, condemned what he described as the commercialization of street naming by council officials, alleging that they often name public roads after individuals who have paid them for the privilege.

He said it was unacceptable for anyone to wake up and arbitrarily name roads funded by the FCT Administration after private individuals without due authorization. “You can’t just wake up, collect money from someone, and before we know it, the street becomes Dr. So-So Street or Professor So-So Avenue. We are struggling to fund these projects, so anyone who paid for such should get their money back,” Wike said.

Declaring a total stop to the practice, the minister stressed that only individuals who have made significant contributions to the development of Abuja or the nation deserve such recognition. He further directed that any street naming outside due process must be reversed immediately.

Wike maintained that streets within the city center should reflect honor and integrity, not financial influence. “We must know who we are naming a street after and what they have contributed to the community. You can’t name a street after someone just because he has ₦2 million to spare. If you want, go to the satellite towns like Kabusa or Ketti and do that, not in the city,” he warned.

He also revealed that even within his own residence, unauthorized naming had occurred, describing it as an act of impunity that would no longer be tolerated. “I woke up one morning to see a street named after someone in the area where I live as Minister. That ends today. From now, I won’t forgive such actions,” he declared.

Wike noted that deserving individuals—such as sports icons or national heroes—could be honored in future, provided the recognition follows proper governmental procedure.

Speaking on the infrastructure project, Wike reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to providing essential facilities that would transform Abuja into a modern, globally competitive capital city.

The FCT Minister of State, Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, also praised President Bola Tinubu’s vision for inclusive infrastructure development across all districts of the territory. She said the new engineering works at Guzape AO9 and Asokoro AIT would enhance connectivity, ease traffic congestion, and open up new areas for development.

Mahmoud commended the National Assembly for its consistent legislative support and lauded Wike’s leadership for driving the administration’s urban renewal agenda. She urged residents to cooperate with the FCTA to achieve sustainable progress across the capital.

According to the source, the twins maintained a daily routine of speaking around midnight, but the conversation took a sudden turn that night when unusual activity was noticed at the General’s end.

He said the line went dead abruptly after the General paused during the call, apparently due to the unfolding situation at the base.

The twin brother reportedly made repeated attempts to reconnect, sending messages and calling continuously, but received no response throughout the night.

“He kept trying until about 4 am, but there was no answer,” the source said.

The family later confirmed the tragedy after a senior military officer contacted them around 6:30 am, informing them that the base had come under attack and that the Brigade Commander was among those killed.

The relative described the incident as devastating, noting that communication had broken down during the assault.

The late General was later buried alongside other fallen soldiers in Maiduguri, Borno State.
