iPhone 17 Pro Max Shortages Hit Global Markets, Grey Imports Surge in Nigeria
iPhone 17 Pro Max, Apple’s newest flagship smartphone, is in short supply around the world, but it is already flooding Nigeria’s grey markets, where eager buyers are paying steep prices for imported units — some of which may be fake or lack valid warranties.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Apple’s iPhone 17 series, launched globally on September 19, 2025, has faced widespread shortages at official retail outlets due to overwhelming demand and production limits. In major markets such as the United States, United Kingdom, and Qatar, delivery wait times stretch from two to six weeks.
In Nigeria, however, the iPhone 17 Pro Max is readily available through grey-market dealers, especially in Lagos’s bustling Computer Village. These devices are being imported from Dubai, Hong Kong, and other regions where stock arrived earlier.
Sellers in the market say demand has been strong despite high prices. The 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max currently sells for about ₦2.75 million ($1,950), nearly double the phone’s U.S. retail price of $1,099.
“I sold out my first batch within two days,” said Akin Adesola, a mobile phone trader in Computer Village. “People want to own it immediately, even if it costs more.”
However, industry experts warn that many of these grey imports may not come with official Apple warranties or valid regional certifications. Because Apple does not have official retail operations in Nigeria, most devices are brought in by private importers, often outside official supply chains.
Consumer advocates have expressed concerns over counterfeit or “refurbished” phones being sold as brand-new iPhone 17 Pro Max units. Some reports describe older models like the iPhone XR being cosmetically upgraded with new casings to resemble the latest Pro Max design.
“The safest way to verify authenticity is to check the model number in Settings and confirm it matches Apple’s listings,” said tech analyst Femi Ogunleye. “If it doesn’t, there’s a good chance the phone has been tampered with or isn’t covered by warranty.”
Apple’s supply constraints have been linked to higher-than-expected demand for the new model, coupled with production delays in Asia. Analysts say the company deliberately limits early shipments to manage global rollouts and maintain exclusivity around launch periods.
In the meantime, Nigerian buyers face difficult choices. Official Apple resellers in regions such as the UAE and South Africa are prioritizing local preorders, leaving Nigerian retailers to rely on secondary distributors. Prices remain volatile, often changing daily based on the naira’s exchange rate and import costs.
For many Nigerians, the purchase represents both a status symbol and a major financial stretch. A 256GB iPhone 17 Pro Max costs roughly two years’ salary for someone earning Nigeria’s minimum wage.
Despite this, queues and crowds persist in Lagos and Abuja as consumers line up for early units. Some buyers argue that grey-market imports are their only option since Apple has not yet launched official stores in Nigeria.
“I don’t care where it comes from as long as it works,” said Tolu Ajayi, a customer who recently purchased the new device. “Everyone wants the latest iPhone — it’s like a badge of success.”
Industry observers predict the global shortage could continue through the end of 2025 as Apple ramps up production. Analysts also expect grey markets across Africa to remain active, supplying unmet demand from early adopters.
Consumer-protection agencies in Nigeria have urged caution, advising buyers to confirm warranty status and inspect serial numbers on Apple’s website before completing purchases.
As long as supply remains tight and official distribution channels stay limited, Nigeria’s parallel import market is expected to thrive — even if it means customers take risks to stay ahead in the race for Apple’s most sought-after phone.
