PDP Still Vibrant Despite Defections, Says Udenta
ABUJA, Nigeria — Political analyst and founding National Secretary of the Alliance for Democracy, Prof. Udenta Udenta, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains strong and vibrant despite recent waves of defections by some top members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
Udenta stated this during an interview on Arise Television on Tuesday, saying the exit of a few individuals does not mean the collapse of the PDP.
“The PDP is alive, vibrant, and deeply rooted among the people. What we are seeing is only a movement among political elites,” Udenta said.
He described the defectors as political opportunists who are only interested in personal ambition, not the welfare of Nigerians. According to him, the real strength of the PDP lies in its grassroots supporters who continue to believe in the party’s ideals and leadership.
Defections Not a Threat
Udenta said the defections are not enough to threaten the existence of the party, stressing that those leaving represent a small segment of the elite class.
“It’s not the people that are leaving; it’s just a few individuals driven by selfish reasons. The people are watching, and many are angry because these leaders did not consult them before moving to another party,” he said.
He added that the ongoing exodus could even help the PDP become more united and focused ahead of future elections.
“What is happening is a political cleansing. The party may become smaller but will emerge stronger and more cohesive,” he said.
Focus on 2025 Convention
Udenta said the forthcoming PDP National Convention, scheduled for November 16, 2025, would be a defining moment for the party’s revival.
“If the PDP holds a peaceful and successful convention, the party will bounce back and reposition itself as a serious opposition,” he said.
He noted that the party still has credible leaders and a strong ideological foundation, capable of challenging the ruling APC in the 2027 general election.
Udenta also hinted that if former President Goodluck Jonathan decides to contest under the PDP platform and gets the party’s ticket, he could stand a good chance of winning the election.
Recent Defections and Party’s Response
The PDP has witnessed several defections in recent months, including that of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, who officially joined the APC, citing a desire to align with the federal government’s development agenda.
Despite these developments, the PDP leadership has maintained that the party remains firm and united.
National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, said the defections are part of efforts by the ruling party to weaken the opposition and create a one-party state.
“The PDP has survived worse crises in the past and came out stronger. This time will not be different,” Ologunagba said.
Looking Ahead
Political observers believe the upcoming convention will be a major test of unity and internal democracy within the PDP. Many expect the event to produce a stronger leadership capable of rebuilding public trust and restoring the party’s influence nationwide.
Udenta concluded that the defections are temporary setbacks, not the end of the PDP.
“The party will recover, reorganize, and rise again. Nigerians still believe in the PDP as the main alternative to the APC,” he said.

Benin Republic Foils Coup: Military Arrests 13 Soldiers Behind Failed Takeover.
Military and security officials in Benin Republic have apprehended approximately a dozen soldiers, including the key ringleaders, following a failed coup attempt. Sources revealed that 13 individuals were detained, most of whom are active military personnel, with one former soldier among the suspects.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The arrests came after a group of officers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on national television on Sunday morning, claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon and dissolved all state institutions. The officers asserted that they had seized control of the government.
The presidency, however, confirmed that President Talon is safe and that loyalist forces are restoring order. Authorities described the coup attempt as the work of “a small group” with limited reach, adding that the city and the country remain secure.
Regional bloc ECOWAS has condemned the attempted takeover, describing it as a serious and unacceptable challenge to the democratic will of the people. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission called for strict adherence to the country’s Constitution and praised the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in regaining control. ECOWAS warned that the plot’s leaders would be held accountable for any loss of life or property arising from their actions and reaffirmed its full support for Benin, including potential deployment of the regional standby force if necessary.

While specific details of their discussions were not disclosed, the meeting is widely interpreted as part of preparatory consultations ahead of the 2027 elections. Atiku described the encounter as a pleasure, stating, “It was a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”
Separately, Atiku’s Senior Political Assistant, Olarenwaju, attributed the former Vice President’s actions against Jonathan in 2015 to a breach of a gentleman’s agreement. Speaking during an Space discussion titled “APC Must Go,” Olarenwaju explained that his alignment with Atiku was motivated by a broader vision for Nigeria’s progress. He said, “Most of the answers I’m going to give tonight are not just based on my deliberations with Atiku, they are based on my desire for a better Nigeria. At the end of the day, if Nigeria is better, my life is better and easier as a Nigerian. So I only find myself with Atiku; in 2015, I didn’t find myself with Atiku, I found myself on the side of Goodluck Jonathan.”
