Peter Obi Denies Political Alliance with Jonathan Ahead of 2027 Elections

Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has dismissed widespread rumors that he is forming a political alliance with former President Goodluck Jonathan ahead of the 2027 general elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Speaking through his media aide, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, Obi clarified that there is no pact or agreement between him and Jonathan. He described their relationship as cordial and based on mutual respect, not political interest.

“Our principal and the former president have a very good working relationship and they know each other well,” Tanko said in a statement. “Seeing them talk to each other does not mean anything political. It should not be translated to mean an alliance or a pact about 2027.”

Tanko added that even during Obi’s recent meeting with Jonathan in Ghana, there was no discussion about forming a joint political front to challenge President Bola Tinubu or the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the next election.

“There was nothing like that,” Tanko said. “Their discussion focused on national issues and how to move the country forward.”

Friendly Meeting, Not Political Deal

Earlier in September, Obi held a closed-door meeting with Jonathan in Abuja, which sparked speculation about a possible collaboration ahead of the next polls. Obi later described the meeting as “fruitful,” calling Jonathan his “elder brother, statesman, and leader.”

According to sources, the meeting centered on Nigeria’s economy, security, and governance, not electoral plans. However, the timing of the meeting led to public talk that both men were preparing to form a coalition.

PDP Reacts

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which Jonathan once led, has reacted to the development, saying both Obi and Jonathan are free to return if they wish.

Debo Ologunagba, the PDP National Publicity Secretary, told reporters that the party has not received any formal indication from either of them.

“Both are respected figures in our political space,” Ologunagba said. “They know they are always welcome in the PDP, but there has been no approach or official discussion about that.”

Supporters Weigh In

Meanwhile, some members of the Obidient Movement — the support base of Peter Obi — have urged Jonathan to step aside and allow Obi to lead a united opposition ahead of 2027. They believe Obi remains the most credible alternative to the current administration.

“The country needs a fresh direction, and Obi represents that,” one supporter said. “We respect former President Jonathan, but Obi should be allowed to run without distraction.”

No Pact, Just Mutual Respect

Despite mounting speculation, political analysts say there is no solid evidence of an alliance between the two leaders. Both have maintained open lines of communication, but their relationship appears more personal than political.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, analysts believe such meetings among political figures will continue. However, Obi’s camp insists his focus remains on advocating for good governance, economic recovery, and national unity — not political deals.

Bottom Line

Peter Obi has made it clear: there is no political pact or alliance with former President Goodluck Jonathan. Their recent meeting, he said, was centered on the nation’s future, not election strategies.

“People should stop reading meanings into every meeting,” Tanko concluded. “Our focus is on how to rebuild Nigeria, not on political calculations.”

The arrests came after a group of officers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on national television on Sunday morning, claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon and dissolved all state institutions. The officers asserted that they had seized control of the government.

The presidency, however, confirmed that President Talon is safe and that loyalist forces are restoring order. Authorities described the coup attempt as the work of “a small group” with limited reach, adding that the city and the country remain secure.

Regional bloc ECOWAS has condemned the attempted takeover, describing it as a serious and unacceptable challenge to the democratic will of the people. In a statement issued in Abuja, the Commission called for strict adherence to the country’s Constitution and praised the efforts of the government and the Republican Army in regaining control. ECOWAS warned that the plot’s leaders would be held accountable for any loss of life or property arising from their actions and reaffirmed its full support for Benin, including potential deployment of the regional standby force if necessary.

Separately, Atiku’s Senior Political Assistant, Olarenwaju, attributed the former Vice President’s actions against Jonathan in 2015 to a breach of a gentleman’s agreement. Speaking during an Space discussion titled “APC Must Go,” Olarenwaju explained that his alignment with Atiku was motivated by a broader vision for Nigeria’s progress. He said, “Most of the answers I’m going to give tonight are not just based on my deliberations with Atiku, they are based on my desire for a better Nigeria. At the end of the day, if Nigeria is better, my life is better and easier as a Nigerian. So I only find myself with Atiku; in 2015, I didn’t find myself with Atiku, I found myself on the side of Goodluck Jonathan.”
