Citizens Express Frustration, Say Government Setting a “Bad Precedent”

Across social media platforms and public discussions, citizens are increasingly expressing disappointment over recent government actions they believe favor a few at the expense of the majority. Many say the administration is drifting away from transparency, accountability, and fairness — values once promised during the election campaign.
“This is really unfair. This administration is setting a very bad precedent,” said one concerned citizen during an interview with local reporters in Abuja. “If this continues, it will destroy public trust in government decisions.”
Although the government has defended its recent moves as necessary reforms to stabilize the economy, critics argue that the measures have brought hardship to ordinary Nigerians. They point to rising living costs, unemployment, and limited access to essential services such as power supply, fuel, and healthcare.
Public Outcry Over Recent Decisions
The discontent comes after several controversial policies were introduced in recent months, including subsidy removals, new taxes, and restrictions affecting small businesses. Civil society groups and opposition parties have accused the government of ignoring the suffering of citizens while focusing on political and personal interests.
Human rights advocate Amina Yusuf described the current situation as “deeply worrying,” adding that “when leaders create rules that only benefit themselves, it becomes a dangerous example for future administrations.”
Government Defends Its Actions
In response, government spokespersons insist that the administration’s policies are designed to create long-term stability and attract investment. According to officials, the painful reforms are part of broader economic adjustments aimed at reducing dependence on oil revenue and building a stronger local economy.
“We understand people’s pain, but these reforms are not meant to punish anyone,” said a senior government official who asked not to be named. “We are building a foundation that will secure the country’s future. Change takes time.”
Still, many Nigerians remain unconvinced. Market traders, transport workers, and civil servants say their daily realities tell a different story. Food prices have doubled, transportation costs have risen sharply, and many families struggle to meet basic needs.
Analysts Warn of Growing Distrust
Political analysts warn that if the government does not act quickly to ease economic pressure and improve communication, it may lose public confidence.
“Governance relies on trust,” said Dr. Kunle Adeyemi, a political science lecturer at the University of Lagos. “When people begin to feel their leaders are not listening or acting fairly, frustration grows, and that can lead to protests or instability.”
Calls for Transparency and Inclusion
Many Nigerians are now calling for more inclusive decision-making and open dialogue between the government and the people. Civil organizations have urged the administration to listen to citizens’ concerns and ensure that policies are fair and transparent.
“This country belongs to all of us,” said another resident. “We want leadership that respects the people and sets good examples for future generations.”
As the government continues to defend its policies, the gap between officials and citizens appears to be widening. Whether the administration can rebuild public trust will depend largely on how it responds to growing calls for fairness and accountability.

The arrests came after a group of officers, calling themselves the Military Committee for Refoundation, appeared on national television on Sunday morning, claiming to have removed President Patrice Talon and dissolved all state institutions. Atiku described the encounter as a pleasure, stating, “It was a pleasure catching up with former President Goodluck Jonathan yesterday evening, following his recent return from Guinea-Bissau.”
