FG Launches Cancer Awareness Campaign in Plateau Community
Federal Government, through the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT), on Wednesday organized a cancer sensitization campaign in Kanke community, located in Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State, to raise public awareness about the growing threat of cancer and promote early detection.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
The campaign aimed to educate residents on the importance of regular medical check-ups, healthy living, and early signs of cancer, which experts say can save lives if detected in time.
Speaking during the event, Dr. Usman Ali, a representative of NICRAT, said the sensitization program is part of the federal government’s efforts to reduce cancer-related deaths and improve healthcare delivery across rural communities.
“We are here to let people know that cancer is not a death sentence,” Dr. Ali said. “If detected early and treated properly, many people can recover and live healthy lives. Our goal is to bring this message to every corner of Nigeria.”
According to him, Nigeria records thousands of new cancer cases each year, with limited access to screening and treatment centers, especially in rural areas. He said the Institute is working closely with state and local governments to make cancer care more accessible.
Residents of Kanke turned out in large numbers for the event, which featured free medical screenings, health talks, and distribution of educational materials. Medical experts also demonstrated self-examination techniques for breast and prostate cancers, two of the most common types affecting Nigerians.
Mrs. Hauwa Musa, a local trader who attended the event, said she was grateful for the opportunity to learn more about cancer prevention.
“Before today, I didn’t know much about cancer. I used to think it was only for rich people or those in big cities,” she said. “Now I understand that it can happen to anyone, and it’s important to go for check-ups.”
The Director-General of NICRAT, Dr. Usman Sani, said the government is determined to strengthen the fight against cancer through awareness, early screening, and better treatment facilities. He noted that many people in rural areas often seek help too late due to lack of information or fear.
“We want to change that mindset,” Dr. Sani explained. “This campaign is designed to reach people directly in their communities. The earlier cancer is detected, the better the chances of survival.”
He added that the institute plans to extend the campaign to other parts of Plateau State and neighboring regions as part of a national outreach program aimed at reducing the burden of cancer across the country.
In his remarks, Kanke Local Government Chairman, Hon. Luka Gyang, commended the federal government for bringing the awareness program to his community. He said the initiative would go a long way in saving lives.
“Many people here don’t have access to proper information about cancer,” he said. “This kind of sensitization will help our people understand how to protect their health and when to seek medical help.”
Experts at the event emphasized the role of lifestyle changes such as avoiding tobacco, eating healthy foods, engaging in regular exercise, and going for periodic medical check-ups in preventing cancer.
The program ended with a pledge of continued collaboration between federal and local authorities to sustain cancer awareness and screening activities in the region.
